Star Castle Hotel |
Hugh Town , St Mary’s (map) |
1593 | House in Star Castle Fort. Changes from the late 17th century. Transferred granite rubble with granite and brick associations; M-shaped, slate hipped roof with lateral, central valley and ridge stacks. Star-shaped, octagonal floor plan that mirrors that of the surrounding bastions. 2 floors with attic; 3 bay windows on each facade with central protrusions protruding on both sides. Original granite-shaped door architecture with a drop-shaped head. Flat roof dormers with horn sashes from the late 19th century. Interior: two basement floors above basement. two heated ground floor chambers with adjacent chimneys and stairs and double-leaf doors. Wooden corner staircase from the late 17th century through both upper floors. The main chamber on the ground floor has a 17th century granite fireplace with polished wooden half-columns. The upstairs room has a white, Greek, Doric fireplace with a center piece with oak leaves and laurel leaves. Some blocked sloping chimneys on the first floor. The main fortress in a defensive system was built under Francis Godolphin to counter the threat posed by the Spaniards after the Armada of 1588. Star Castle, with its outer bastions and walls, is an important and complete example of an Elizabethan fortress built on a common Renaissance plan. Star Castle was the last royal fortress, Prince Charles and his suite to settle here after their retreat from the Battle of Bodmin in 1646. It was converted into a hotel in 1933. |
