The capital Providence is also the largest city in Rhode Island.

This is a list of all 39 parishes in the US state of Rhode Island . Eight of these municipalities were incorporated as a city , while the other 31 have the administrative form of town . Towns in Rhode Island can also take over the form of government of a city without having to be incorporated as a city.

Some cities in Rhode Iceland also include towns that as Village are known and represent historical settlements. Well-known villages are Kingston in South Kingstown , where the University of Rhode Island is located, or Wickford in North Kingstown . Villages, however, are dependent municipalities and do not have a separate administration.

Note: The list only includes four of the five county seats of the state of Rhode Island because the fifth administrative seat is located in a town without its own town or city status, so it does not belong in this list.
