The following list shows all of Maryland's parishes and settlements . It contains cities , towns and villages as well as census-designated places (CDP) . Because most of the population lives in suburban areas in the metropolises of Baltimore and Washington , the proportion of CDPs in the total number of settlements in Maryland is comparatively high.

The upper table shows the settlements that had more than 20,000 inhabitants at the 2010 census . Data from the previous census in 2000 are shown for comparison . The ranking corresponds to the 2010 figures.
