List of streets and squares in the old city of Jerusalem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of streets and squares in the old city of Jerusalem performs all the streets and squares of the Old City of Jerusalem on. The entire old city of Jerusalem is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger .

swell

This list uses city maps from Google Maps and OpenStreetMap and a printed city map of Jerusalem as sources. In addition, photos of Jerusalem street signs from Wikimedia Commons under the category "Street signs in Jerusalem Old City" are used for the spelling.

Another source is the Jerusalem City Council's online street directory, unfortunately the site is rarely available. In this alphabetical street directory, each street forms a link that leads to a page special for that street. The administrative number for the street is given on this page. This page also contains information on the origin of the street name, information on whether the street name is historical and information on the location of the street.

Street names on Jerusalem street signs are listed in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic and English. Unfortunately, the Arabic and English street names in the street directory of the Jerusalem City Council do not always match the Arabic and English names on the street signs.

Structure and abbreviations of the list

The street names are listed in German, English, Arabic and Hebrew. Length in meters, coordinates, pictures and notes on the origin of the street names are attached. In column V (= quarter) the quarter in which the street is located is recorded, a = Armenian, c = Christian, j = Jewish, m = Muslim. In the column No. the number is listed according to the street directory of the Jerusalem city administration. The number is a link to the corresponding page of the Jerusalem City Council (Hebrew). Column H shows whether the street name can be traced back to a historical description (= j) or not (= n).

vocabulary

Here are the most important words for understanding street names:

Arabic vocabulary

Arabic طريق tarik means way, street and is used in front of many Arabic street names. It was partly omitted for reasons of clarity. The word arabic شارع Schare'a for street is used less often. When it comes to an alley that goes steeply uphill or a flight of stairs, the word for climb, staircase, obstacle often becomes Arabic عقبة akabat, also: prefixed with akbat . The word Arabic is particularly common in Jerusalem's old town باب Bab for goal ahead.

Hebrew vocabulary

Hebrew רחוב rechov is the Hebrew word for street. It is prefixed to almost every Hebrew street name and has been omitted from the list for reasons of clarity. Sometimes it turns into Hebrew too דרך derech used for way. Hebrew כיכר kikar means place. When it comes to a steep uphill alley or stairs, the word for ascent, staircase often becomes Hebrew מעלה ma'ale or hebrew מעלות ma'alot in front. Hebrew שער sha'ar means gate.
