“This memorial was erected to commemorate the expulsion of the German population beyond the Oder and Neisse and from the Sudetenland. There were around 15 million Germans who had lived in these areas for centuries and suddenly had to leave their homeland. Mass displacement began as early as 1944 and continued to grow in the years that followed. It was carried out ruthlessly and inhumanly. More than 2 million Germans found their cruel deaths. May this memorial serve as a reminder and help ensure that such crimes are never repeated. The main areas of displacement are shown and listed on the relief map opposite. In addition, most of the German population was expelled from their settlement areas in Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia. These areas cannot be shown cartographically here. The right panel shows the Altvaterturm, which stood on the Altvater 1492 m above sea level, the highest mountain in the East Sudetenland.
