List of Mondo films
The list of Mondo films includes films that can be assigned to the genre of Mondo films . This also includes the so-called death films, which began with the pioneer Faces of Death (1978) and which string together real or fictional killings.
Genre term
Mondo ( Italian for "world") is the name of a film genre whose films show the manners and customs of people from all over the world and seemingly authentic depictions of sexuality and violence in a pseudo-documentary style. However, these were often recreated in the studio. The films were supposed to have an accusatory and rousing effect and originally served as a critique of civilization . The first known representative of the genre is the film Mondo Cane (1962) by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Paolo Cavara , which also gave the genre its name. Occasionally the genre is also listed as a shockumentary.
In the course of time, the civilization-critical approach fell back in favor of the shock factor. This is how films like Faces of Death were made , most of which consisted of a series of war footage, executions and murders.
Links to other genres are exploitation films , which, however, mostly have a plot, as well as the myth of the snuff film , as some representations in the moon films show real killings.
precursor
The first films that can be seen as the forerunners of the Mondo genre began in the 1920s. What the forerunners have in common is a documentary or educational claim, in which the pictures show shock scenes. Movies with a feature film, for example, listed in the Internet Mondo Movie Database on which the list is based, are not mentioned here.
