Lorenzo Ghielmi

Lorenzo Ghielmi (born September 1, 1959 in Milan , Italy ) is an Italian organist , harpsichordist , conductor and musicologist .

Ghielmi studied organ, harpsichord and piano playing and completed his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel with Jean-Claude Zehnder . As a student with Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini , he devoted himself to Italian organ music.

Ghielmi lectures at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan , at the Leopold Mozart Center in Augsburg and since 2006 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He was visiting professor at the Trossingen University of Music and the Lübeck University of Music for a while and gave master classes at the Haarlem Summer Academy in the Netherlands and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg .

Ghielmi is titular organist at the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan on the Ahrend organ, which was newly built in 1990/1991 . He was the most important advisor when building the Mascioni organ in the Cathedral of St. Mary in Tokyo .

Ghielmi also appears as a player of the fortepiano . Sometimes he makes music with the viol player Vittorio Ghielmi , his brother. Ghielmi is the founder and director of the ensemble La divina armonia ( The Divine Harmony ). Concert tours have taken him to Europe, Japan and the USA.

Ghielmi has been a jury member at various organ competitions for many years, for example in Bruges , Chartres , Freiberg , Lausanne , Maastricht , Nuremberg , Toulouse and Tokyo.

A sound recording and a book by Ghielmis deal specifically with the organ works by Nicolaus Bruhns . Ghielmi has also published academic studies on various Milanese composers and sheet music by Girolamo Frescobaldi . Further publications concern the organ building of the 16th and 17th centuries and the interpretation of the work of Johann Sebastian Bach . He made particular contributions to the rediscovery and performance of the St. John Passion by Francesco Feo in 2009.
