Loveless is the second studio album of the post-hardcore band Dream On, Dreamer from Melbourne . It was published worldwide on June 28, 2013 via UNFD and entered the domestic charts on July 14, 2013 , where it could only stay for a week. Loveless contains ten pieces and has a total playing time of 42:09 minutes.

Origin and publications

Compared to the debut album Heartbound , Loveless was not produced by a well-known producer, but by the guitarist of the band Callan Orr. The artwork for the album was done by singer Marcel Gadacz. The group initially planned to fly to the USA to have the album produced by a professional producer. The musicians played with the idea of developing the album themselves before the debut album was released in 2012. However, several factors, including the financial budget and limited studio time, led the musicians to record and produce the album themselves. The musicians were supported in the work by Callan's brother Kevin.

The band wrote the first songs on the album while they were on a concert tour. The first song that the musicians wrote was the title track Loveless . The group also wrote pieces that did not make it on the album.

The first single the band released on May 8, 2013 via radio station Triple J . This single is called The World in Front of Me . A short time later, the music video was published on YouTube . A music video entitled Neverlove followed on August 15, 2013. Before that, the song was put online as a lyric video in June . Loveless was released worldwide on June 28, 2013 via UNFD .

Texts

The lyrics are all written by the band themselves. Mainly responsible is singer Marcel Gadacz, who comes from Germany . He describes how his texts are written on a very personal basis and thus express what he feels emotionally. He said that every song has a deeper background thought. Via the band's official Tumblr profile, Gadacz published an official statement for each piece, in which he explains how the respective song came about and why he wrote it:

  • Loveless is the album's opener and should convey to the listener what emotions can be expected in the further course of the CD. Gadacz describes that he was able to gain a lot of experience and that his emotions ranged from the "highest point of happiness to the deepest abyss of melancholy". In Loveless , Gadacz processes his doubts and judgments about the decisions made.
  • The World in Front of Me symbolizes an important event in Gadacz's life. Six years ago he decided to leave his homeland, family and friends in order to rebuild his life in another country. He wanted to fulfill his dreams, learn a new language and start a band. In addition, the song should represent his doubts about himself as well as the prejudices of his fellow men. Also to The World in Front of Me encourage their environment to change so that life in a society is possible.
  • Foundations describes that a situation can be remembered well or badly. Gadacz tries to deal with this situation in the best possible way. Foundations is designed to stimulate thought. In this piece, singer Marcel Gadacz processes his thoughts on the questions "Who am I?" And "What is the meaning of life?" He states that everyone is able to shape their own life according to their own will.
  • Infinity is the fourth track on the Loveless album . He describes that every decision made in the present can change future life as far as possible. Gadacz writes that you have to accept every decision, regardless of whether it was good or bad, since in the further course of life there is the possibility of indirectly compensating for earlier decisions. He makes it clear that everyone is responsible for their own life and not a puppet of other people. It should be an invitation to express your own opinion.
  • Hear Me Out is a piece that was written on a personal level. The song is supposed to express that life throws a stone in the way for everyone at some point. It is an invitation to accept the challenge and not to give up immediately. Gadacz thinks that every experience strengthens the individual. He says that he himself had several problems that put him on the verge of giving up. He makes it clear that failure is permissible.
  • Neverlove is another piece that Gadacz wrote on a personal level. It describes a period in his life when he is unable to "love". Among other things, it should represent the time in which his own life was a top priority for him. In Neverlove he describes a negative view of the subject of "love", but there is also positive news to be heard. Love is the possibility to "embrace" true feelings and enjoy them to the fullest.
  • Moving On, Moving Far describes that changes are necessary when a situation constantly leads to complicating the life path. This title is also special for him. He describes that there were situations when his feeling was not at one with his heart. It describes his decision to leave everything that made him unhappy.
  • EVOL again describes the mental self-doubt and the uncertainty about its decisions. This describes how the singer has dealt with his problems and is supposed to state that one should never waste time chasing something that does not exist.
  • Black Maine is the penultimate song on the album. In it, singer Gadacz describes his inner voice, which has told him in some situations how to react. In the piece he also sings about the chances that everyone has to learn from this situation so that one becomes a better and stronger individual. Again, the opinion is voiced that every individual can be an example of change in society.
  • The Tracks We Leave Behind , the final track of the album, summarizes the previous tracks on the album. The question “what do you want to do when you get older” was chosen as the basis. Gadacz describes that he is satisfied and happy with the decisions he has made.

music

Compared to the debut album Heartbound , the sound on Loveless has become much more melodic. The reason for this is, among other things, the line-up changes within the band. With the departure of the former bassist Michael McLeod, Daniel Jungwirth, who previously played keyboard in the band, was appointed as the new bassist, so that the electronic parts are only maintained with samplers.

If there were significantly more electronic elements in the debut album, these take a back seat on Loveless . The style of the album can be described as classic and melodic post-hardcore . Shoutings and Kargesang alternate, mostly at the beginning of the chorus . While Gadacz is responsible for the lyrics, the music is written by Callan Carr.

Reviews

Even if the album is well received by the fans of the group, the specialist press judged the album negatively in some cases. Sarah O'Connor of Rock Sound wrote that there is a single good line to be heard throughout the album, but the rest of the album could also be "the worst West Country Hip-Hop". Nevertheless, the album received 7 points from the music magazine. The British Rock Industry gave 6 out of 10 points on the grounds that the singing was on a low level. However, the critic praised the production of the album and is of the opinion that the group could still improve.

Kill Your Stereo also rated the disc as mediocre. Although the critic described that Loveless was a good second album that you could listen to sometimes, he did not attribute any visions to the band. The album received an average rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Nathaniel Lay from New Noise Magazine gave it 4 out of 5 points. The critic is of the opinion that Heartbound is the heavier album of the two, but the courage to have embarked on experiments is praised.

James Dawson of The Music thinks Loveless is a refreshing mix of aggression and loving sentimentality.
