Ludwig August Clericus (born March 28, 1827 in Danzig ; † March 1, 1892 in Magdeburg ) was a German sphragistician, genealogist, illustrator, heraldist and editor.

Life

Clericus attended the Royal High School in Elbing and the Kneiphöfische Gymnasium in Königsberg i. Pr. After high school enrolled him at the University of Königsberg of Law. In the winter semester of 1847/48 he was active in the Corps Masovia . He dedicated the Albertina songbook and the color song to him

He broke off his law studies and switched to the Königsberg Art Academy in 1850 . In 1855 he moved to Berlin . Here he began as a freelance writer and editor . At the end of the 1860s, Ludwig worked as an illustrator for numerous newspapers and magazines. The magazines included the Kladderadatsch and the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung . He began to be interested in heraldry , numismatics and sealing studies . The focus was on the city coats of arms and their history and the outcome of his research formed the extensive collections of seals. In Berlin he played a major role in the publication of the Herolds and other art magazines; but the heraldry appreciated his pertinent writing. Around 1880 he moved to Magdeburg , where he directed the arts and crafts museum and was secretary and administrator of an arts and crafts association. New arts and crafts associations in Burg (near Magdeburg) , Gardelegen and Quedlinburg were based on his arrangement when they were founded. Exhibitions became known through his use of these arts and crafts associations in Halle (Saale) in 1881. Munich (1888) and London (1891) followed. The Pallas (magazine) was significantly influenced by Clericus.

With reference to the Masurian Bassenheim and the coat of arms of the Waldbott , Clericus wanted to change Masovia's coat of arms. He did not prevail against “getting used to” the old.
