Mayrhofer was born in Linz in 1862 as the son of the baker's daughter Anna Mayrhofer (1844–1930). From 1876 to 1879 he completed his apprenticeship as an organ builder in the company of his stepfather Anton Hanel (1820–1880) in Linz-Urfahr and subsequently worked in various organ builders, including EF Walcker & Cie. in Ludwigsburg . He has worked as a fitter in Germany , Switzerland , Spain , France , Scotland , Bohemia , Hungary , the Netherlands , Belgium , Russia and Turkey . After the death of his second stepfather, Johann Lachmayr , he took over his business in Linz-Urfahr in 1917. Up until Mayrhofer's retirement in 1935, 47 organs had been built or rebuilt in his organ building workshop for Upper Austria. His son Eugen Mayrhofer (1908–1932) was also an organ builder, but his early death prevented the company from continuing.
