Ludwig von Sobbe

Ludwig Karl Heinrich von Sobbe (born March 9, 1835 in Trier , † November 7, 1918 in Charlottenburg ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Ludwig was the son of the later Prussian major general Dietrich Karl Heinrich von Sobbe (1796–1877) and his wife Johanna, née von Gaertner (1803–1843).

Military career

After visiting the school in Bonn and the cadet schools in Wahlstatt and Berlin Sobbe occurred on 26 April 1853 as second lieutenant in the Guards Rifles Battalion of the Prussian army one. From October 1858 to June 1861 he was assigned to the War Academy and in 1860 was transferred to the No. 2 Jäger Battalion as Prime Lieutenant . In 1865 he was transferred to the No. 5 Jäger Battalion as a captain and company commander.

During the campaign in 1866 , Sobbe was involved in the battles near Nachod , Skalitz and Königgrätz . In 1870 he was employed as a major in the General Staff of the XI. Army Corps in Kassel.

In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 , Sobbe took part in the battles of Weißenburg , Wörth and Sedan , the bombardment of Pfalzburg and the siege of Paris . For his behavior he received both classes of the Iron Cross .

On August 19, 1872, he came to the General Staff of the 21st Division , was on 31 December 1873 in the General Staff added, and here on January 18, 1875 to lieutenant colonel promoted. As such, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the XIII on June 1, 1875 . (Royal Württemberg) Army Corps in Stuttgart . On January 24, 1882, he took over as chief of the general staff of the VIII Army Corps in Koblenz , where he rose to major general two years later . As such, Sobbe was from June 1, 1885 to August 9, 1888 the commander of the 40th Infantry Brigade and commander in chief of the troops in the Duchy of Braunschweig . Before the end of his service there, Sobbe was promoted to lieutenant general on August 4, 1888 . He was then given command of the 1st Guard Division in Berlin and was honored on January 21, 1889 by being awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion . Sobbe gave up the large association on November 3, 1890 and was then appointed governor of Strasbourg . In this position he was awarded the Order of the Crown, First Class with Swords, on the occasion of the festival in January 1891

Under awarded the Red Eagle , First Class with oak leaves Sobbe was on January 16, 1892 Board for disposition made. Wilhelm II gave him the character of General of the Infantry on September 2, 1892 . He was also given permission to wear the uniform of the Guard Rifle Battalion.

His final resting place is in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .

family

Sobbe had married Pauline Dietz (1844-1904) on February 22, 1866 in Berlin. The marriage resulted in several children, including the future German major general Dietrich von Sobbe (1868–1939).
