She bears the patronage of the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Spandau dean's office in the Archdiocese of Berlin .
history
The Catholics who lived in Gatow , Kladow, Groß-Glienicke and Sacrow belonged to the parish of the Spandau Marienkirche until 1935 , later to St. Wilhelm . In 1941, the Gatow Curate was established, which was raised to a parish in 1950. She was also responsible for the Catholics in Kladow, Groß-Glienicke and Sacrow. The services took place in a chapel in the house of the then prelate . The diocese leadership under Bishop Wilhelm Weskamm decided on July 26, 1952 to separate Kladow, Groß-Glienicke and Sacrow from the Gatow parish and to set up an independent curate with effect from August 1, 1952. However, this was only raised to a parish on February 1, 1989. On a leased land a former in 1954 to a design by architect Osterholz barracks of the army rebuilt the church. 1964 on a Church-plot in the Sakrower highway 56 & 58, a community center built. However, the place of worship remained in the old location. Later the services took place in the chapel of the children's home of the Hedwig Sisters at Sakrower Kirchweg 21. With the construction of the Berlin Wall , the Catholics von Groß-Glienicke and Sacrow could no longer reach their place of worship. Construction work on the new church began on June 8, 1985, the foundation stone was laid on September 7 of the same year, the topping-out ceremony on November 15. When the Wall came down, the Catholics of Groß-Glienicke and Sacrow were able to visit their church again. In 2002 the parishes of Kladow and Gatow merged. The Kladower Church was in the center of the united parish area. In this respect, it was obvious when financial reasons made it necessary to give up the Gatower location. On March 15, 2005, Cardinal Georg Sterzinsky deedicated the architecturally significant St. Raphael Church in Gatow. In July of the same year the church building was torn down.
Since 2018, the parish has formed the pastoral area Spandau-Süd with the neighboring parishes of St. Markus and St. Wilhelm , which is expected to merge into a single parish in 2022.
Building description
The building follows an irregular hexagon in plan . The eccentrically aligned tent roof is supported by buttresses made of clinker . The masonry construction is also done with clinker in the Märkischer Verband . The sacristy and a polygonal baptistery are attached to the entrance area . Front of the church since about 1960, a Marian column from bronze , Maria makes a blessing gesture.
Furnishing
The municipality had to raise the funds for the interior decoration itself. Some items come from a chapel that was demolished for a new building for the senior citizens' residence of the Jesuits in Berlin-Kladow. The pews are grouped radially around the altar . The altar and tabernacle , made by Paul Brandenburg , were taken over from the demolished chapel. The same artist created the ambo and baptismal font in 1985 . The statue of the Madonna , a unique piece from Oberammergau , was given by a member of the community. The altarpiece, depicting Christ Pantocrator , was already in the above-mentioned chapel. The windows of the baptistery were created by Ludwig Peter Kowalski in 1957 for the chapel of the Wilhelm Weskamm House.
