Maria Riccarda Wesseling
Maria Riccarda Wesseling (born January 10, 1969 in Wattwil ) is a Swiss- Dutch opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ) and director.
Life
Wesseling studied with Hedwig Vonlanthen (Solothurn), Elisabeth Glauser (Bern University of Music) and Margreet Honig (Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam).
During her studies she played the title role in Rossini's Cenerentola in a tour with the Orchester National de Lille. During the first years of her career, she was a permanent guest at the Stadttheater Bern , where she played roles such as Kassandra ( Troades by Aribert Reimann ), Fenena ( Nabucco ), Enrichetta ( I puritani ), Olga ( Tri Sestri by Péter Eötvös ), Idamante ( Idomeneo ) , Cesare ( Giulio Cesare ) as well as the title role in Bizet's Carmen . During the first years of her career, she sang numerous important Handel roles such as Rinaldo (Lucerne), Amadigi ( Handel Festival Halle , Festival de Radio France Montpellier ), Sesto in Giulio Cesare (Festival de Beaune), Medea in Teseo (Handel Festival Halle) or Dejanira in Hercules (Potsdam). Several of these interpretations are available on CD or DVD.
She celebrated her international breakthrough in 2006 with a short-term substitution at the Paris Opera in the title role of Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride . The director was Krzysztof Warlikowski , with Marc Minkowski at the podium . She also sang Iphigénie at the Teatro Real in Madrid in 2011 , this time directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock . Under Hengelbrock's direction she also sang Orpheus in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice . This production by Pina Bausch was broadcast live on arte , recorded on DVD and has so far been seen in several seasons at the Paris Opera, the ancient Epidauros theater , Lincoln Center New York and the Teatro Real. In 2012 she also appeared at the Teatro Real as Ottavia in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea , this time under the direction of Sylvain Cambreling .
Von Offenbach embodied Hélène in La belle Hélène (Bordeaux) and Métella in La vie parisienne in the production by Laurent Pelly (Lyon), which was released on DVD . Another pillar of her career is contemporary opera. Examples are the title role in Hans Werner Henze's Phaedra at the world premiere at the Staatsoper Berlin , at the Monnaie in Brussels and in the Barbican Center London, Pélérin in Kaija Saariaho's L'amour de loin at the Finnish National Opera , Irma in Péter Eötvös ' Le Balcon in Bordeaux, Malaspina in Salvatore Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici in Lyon, Claude Viviers Where are you, light at the Ruhrtriennale , the queen in Heinz Holliger's Snow White staged by Achim Freyer (Basel). Current roles are Carmen (Bilbao), Giulietta in Hoffmanns Erzählungen in the DVD production by Olivier Py (Genève), Marguerite in La damnation de Faust (Stuttgart and Gent), Fricka in Rheingold (Ruhrtriennale 2015). In 2017 she sang the title role in the world premiere of the opera Anna's Mask by David Philip Hefti . In 19/20 she made her debut with four new roles: Herodias at the Stuttgart State Opera, Amneris in Verdi's Aida, Jezibabain Dvoraks Rusalka at the Flemish Opera Antwerp and Klytämnestra at the Stuttgart State Opera.
In addition to her operatic activities, she also appears in the concert sector, e.g. E.g. in Hector Berlioz ' Les nuits d'été with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of David Zinman , the alto part in the St. John Passion with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Chailly , Mahler's Lied von der Erde and Kindertotenlieder . She regularly gives recitals (e.g. in the Gewandhaus Leipzig , in the Tonhalle Zurich , in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and in the Palazetto Bru Zane in Venice).
In January 2018 Maria Riccarda Wesseling presented her first directorial work with a successful production of Britten's The Rape of Lucretia at the Dutch National Opera Academy.
