history

Before the founding of today's village, the places Reinersen and Hildesheim were located near the Ahlberg (former volcano ) ; both localities became devastation . Reinersen and the Reinhardswald were probably named after the same namesake.

The remains of a rampart from the Iron Age are on the Ahlberg; A small ring wall has been preserved, which runs around the basalt dome and encloses an area of 120 m × 120 m. The history association in Mariendorf designed the eco-path that leads around the Ahlberg and provides insights into the past of this historical place on information boards. The barrows (of which there are many in the Reinhardswald) on the outskirts are remote.

Mariendorf was founded in 1687 by French religious refugees as a colony by Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel and named after his wife Maria Amalia von Kurland . In 1690 the construction of the colony was completed with the completion of 30 buildings, whereby the place was laid out in the shape of a cross. The village church in the center of the village was probably not completed until 1710 for financial reasons. The inhabitants worked in the lignite and clay pits on the Ahlberg from the 17th century to 1920 and operated pottery from 1725 to 1940 .

Almost all the historic buildings in the town center were destroyed in a fire in 1928, only the schoolhouse from 1823 remained untouched, so that it is one of the oldest preserved half-timbered buildings in the village today. Mariendorf survived the Second World War largely unscathed. Only in 1944 was the village hit by an aerial mine that killed 16 people and damaged several buildings.

On December 1, 1970 , as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the town of Immenhausen and the previously independent communities of Holzhausen and Mariendorf merged to form the expanded town of Immenhausen. This made Mariendorf a district of Immenhausen. Since that time, the expansion of the village area has been driven forward through considerable new construction work, for example on the Ahlberg and road expansion. Many families have built their own homes here and commute to work in Kassel . As a result, the population increased significantly.
