The Lempe is an approximately 16.3 km long, southeast and orographically right tributary of the Esse in the district of Kassel , northern Hesse ( Germany ).

course

The Lempe rises in the southwest part of the Reinhardswald on the northern flank of the Junkernkopf (approx.  453  m above sea  level ). Next to its source, which is located in the community-free area of the Reinhardswald estate , there is a crossroads at an altitude of 398  m .

Initially, the Lempe runs north-north-west through the Reinhardswald and at the same time, starting a few hundred meters below its origin, through the nature reserve Upper Lempetal near Hombressen (NSG No. 318887), which was founded in 1998 and is 154.59 hectares in size. The stream flows past the Strufus Cross , after which the hornbeam ditch, coming from the southwest, joins, past the Waldhaus district forester and the small Mühlstädter pond , which is fed by the Lempe. In this area she leaves the Reinhardswald estate and shortly afterwards the Reinhardswald.

Then the Lempe initially flows westward through the hilly landscape of the Hofgeismarer Rötsenke , an extensive, predominantly forestless and agriculturally used area in the northern part of the West Hessian Valley north of Kassel . In this area it runs through the eastern Hofgeismar district of Hombressen , in which Giesbach , Soode and Reinbecke flow. Then it squeezes through the valley between the small forest areas of Strauchberg in the northwest and Lichte Heide in the south, and then flows through the eastern Hofgeismar district of Carlsdorf .

The Lempe then bends towards the northwest and runs past the shrub mill and paper mill in the direction of the Hofgeismar district of Gesundbrunnen , which it passes to the east. It flows - after crossing the federal highway 83  - west of the Evangelical Hospital Gesundbrunnen Hofgeismar and east of the park Gesundbrunnen with the Schönburg castle . The Lempe then passes the Hofgeismar swimming pool north of this park.

Finally, the Lempe turns to the south-west north of the park, only to flow a little later at around 143  m above sea level into the Diemel tributary Esse, which flows there from the south .

Watershed

The headwaters of the Lempe are located on the Fulda-Diemel watershed , which is part of the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed : while the Lempe flows northwest into the Esse , which tends towards the Weser via the Diemel to the north , the Osterbach runs , which rises about 2.7 km south-southeast of the Lempequelle beyond the Junkernkopf , south into the Fulda and then into the Weser.
