Martin Ručínský (born March 11, 1971 in Most , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was active for many years with the Montréal Canadiens , the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League . He last won the Czech championship in April 2015 with his hometown club, HC Verva Litvínov . With the Czech national team he was three times world champion and once Olympic champion .

Career

As a junior he played for the CHZ Litvínov , where he also began his professional career. After a very good performance at the Junior World Championship, he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as 20th.

He immediately moved to North America, but with the Oilers he was used almost exclusively in the American Hockey League farm team with the Cape Breton Oilers . After only two NHL appearances he was given to the Québec Nordiques in the 1991/92 season for goalkeeper Ron Tugnutt . Here he played mostly in the AHL with the Halifax Citadels until the end of the season . In the following season 1992/93 he was able to fight for a regular place.

He played his first senior world championship in 1994 . The following year, the start of the NHL was delayed and he bridged this time in his home country at the CHZ Litvínov. At the end of the season he came back to Quebec. When the Nordiques moved to Denver, he joined the Colorado Avalanche . But before the team won the Stanley Cup , it was given to the Montréal Canadiens . Andrei Kowalenko and Jocelyn Thibault went with him to Montreal to bring Mike Keane and especially Patrick Roy to Denver.

In Montreal, he played in a row with Valeri Bure and Vincent Damphousse , taking it to 60 points in the remaining 56 games. Another highlight of his career was winning the title at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . The following year he won his first world title with the Czech team.

After he was able to win the world title for the second time with the Czech national ice hockey team in 2001 , the Canadiens gave him to the Dallas Stars shortly after the start of the 2001/02 season together with Benoît Brunet in exchange for Donald Audette and Shaun Van Allen . Soon after the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , which did not bring him a medal, his journey continued to the New York Rangers . He ended the season there after which his contract expired. Without a contract he started the next season in his home country, but in October he came to an agreement with the St. Louis Blues at the end of October 2002 . The 2003/04 season he started again with the Rangers, and this time he was given up towards the end of the season. The Vancouver Canucks were the target this time.

After the end of the season, the league went on strike. Ručínský spent the break back in his homeland Litvínov. For the third time he won the world championship title with the national team in 2005.

After the strike ended, he returned to the Rangers for the third time. The 2005/06 season he was able to end this time on Broadway. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he won the bronze medal with the Czech national team.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2006, he signed a contract with the St. Louis Blues, where he was active over two seasons, before moving to HC Sparta Prague in July 2008. In October 2010 he left Sparta Prague after his team had started the season very badly. A week later he was signed by his home club from Litvínov.

With Litvínov he won his first Czech championship in April 2015 before officially ending his career in July 2015.

On January 22, 2019, Martin Ručínský was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
