Maximilian von Laffert (* 10. May 1855 in Lindau , † 20 July 1917 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Saxon cavalry general in the First World War .

Life

Maximilian was the son of tax director Karl von Laffert and his wife Klare, née von der Wense .

He graduated from high school in Celle , attended the Dresden Cadet Corps from 1871 and joined the 3rd Infantry Regiment No. 102 of the Saxon Army in Zittau on April 1, 1874 as a secondary lieutenant . After more than two years, he was transferred to the 1st Hussar Regiment "King Albert" No. 18 on July 1, 1876 . There Laffert acted from November 1, 1878 as a regimental adjutant and was promoted as such on April 28, 1879 to prime lieutenant. From October 1, 1883 to April 30, 1885 he was sent to the Prussian War Academy in Berlin . Then he knew on duty in his regiment and was on May 20, 1885 simultaneous promotion to captain there squadron . Laffert held this function until his transfer as adjutant of 1st Division No. 23 on July 17, 1889. After almost five years of service and promotion to major on July 24, 1893, he was transferred to the staff of the 1st Hussar Regiment No. 18 on January 24, 1894 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on November 18, 1898 . As such, Laffert was appointed commander of the carbine regiment on September 13, 1899 . In the meantime promoted to colonel (since March 23, 1901), on July 24, 1903, he was appointed commander of the Guard Rider Regiment (1st Heavy Regiment) and then on April 23, 1904, commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade No. 32 . Shortly afterwards, Laffert became major general on October 28, 1904 . Laffert was then on September 21, 1907, commander of the 1st Cavalry Brigade No. 23 and at the same time, from October 1, 1907, was entrusted with the management of the affairs of the riding school inspector. From July 6th to October 22nd, 1908, Lieutenant General (from May 22nd, 1908) was available for a short time as an army officer and was then appointed commander of the 40th Division (4th Royal Saxon) in Chemnitz . On November 28, 1913, Laffert took over as the commanding general of the XIX. (II. Royal Saxon) Army Corps in Leipzig and was promoted to General of the Cavalry on May 22, 1913 in this position.

He also held this position when the First World War broke out. After the mobilization, he led the corps as part of the 3rd Army on the Western Front from the Meuse over the Aisne to the Marne and was able to distinguish himself in the battle there. He was then instrumental in the conquest of Lille and fought in the following years mainly on the Lys and in the front section around Lille.

Laffert died suddenly and unexpectedly during a business trip from a heartbeat in Frankfurt am Main. He was buried in the Nordfriedhof in Dresden.
