Arrive safely

The Al-hadj Djumaa in the port of Münster (2017)

A socio-cultural ship project on escape and migration by the Outlaw Foundation with sculptures by the Danish artist Jens Galschiøt was sure to have arrived safely . The aim of the project was to motivate people to deal with the topic of flight and migration . On the one hand, the sensual and artistic impression created by the ship and the figures served, and on the other hand, accompanying events and actions, in which the regional initiatives and organizations of the cities visited were always included.

prehistory

The MS Anton in Nyhavn (2011)

The ship MS Anton has been used for various art happenings since 2010 , with which Jens Galschiøt and the Danish organization Art In Defense of Humanism (AIDOH) wanted to draw attention to the situation of refugees in Europe and in the world. More than 70 bronze sculptures by Galschiøt were first seen in the harbor of the small Danish town of Randers . The boat with the figures went to various Danish ports, both in Jytland and in Funen and Zealand. In December 2011 the refugee boat (Danish: Flygtningeskibet ) lay in Nyhavn in Copenhagen .

The German project under the title "Arrive with security" in 2017 was carried out by the Outlaw Foundation in cooperation with other organizations such as Pro Asyl , terre des hommes , the Glücksspirale , the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Equality , the Ministry of Family , Children, youth, culture and sport of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , various equal charities , church institutions and the federal police . The theoretical background was provided by the “Norderneyer Declaration”, written in February 2016 by 50 experts from different fields of work, which formulated positions on the subject of flight and migration.

First of all, the ship with the sculptures could be seen at the beginning of documenta 14 in Kassel . Due to a dispute over the permit, this part of the campaign had to be stopped prematurely.

Sculptures

Jens Galschiøt's sculptures show people of different ages and ethnicities . They consist of busts in bronze , which are mounted to standing figures, which are wrapped in African-looking robes. The black patinated bronze and the robes give the first impression of an African refugee ship from a great distance. On closer inspection, the assignment of the depicted people to different ethnicities and continents comes into view and indicates that the issue of flight is not territorially limited.

Ships and their journey

The route through Germany

The 65-day shipping route through Germany, which formed the core of the project, totaled 3600 km, with almost 60 locks to be passed. The project started on July 28, 2017 in Bremen and ended on October 1, 2017 in Berlin. The waterways Dortmund-Ems Canal , Datteln-Hamm Canal , Rhine-Herne Canal , Mittelland Canal , Leine , Aller , Saale , Elbe , Elbe-Havel Canal , Ruppiner Wasserstraße and the Spree were used. Due to the low water levels of the Aller, the Saale and the Elbe, some land transport was necessary.

In the first part of the voyage, the MS Anton , which was already in service in Denmark , was a seaworthy ship of the Danish association Levende Hav. The second ship was the Al-hadj Djumaa , a former refugee ship that set off from North Africa for Lampedusa in the summer of 2013 . At that time it had 282 people on board, 217 from Eritrea and 65 from Ethiopia . It is only suitable for inland navigation and was confiscated by the Italian Coast Guard off the coast of Lampedusa. It belongs to a non-profit organization based in Amsterdam , the “Reederei Lampedusa”.

The MS Anton started in Assens in Denmark in mid-July across the North Sea to its first station in Bremen and drove from there to Norderney , Borkum and Emden , Weener and Papenburg . There the figures were transferred to the Al-hadj Djumaa , which drove from Papenburg to Lingen , Münster , Gelsenkirchen , Duisburg , Oberhausen , Hamm , Osnabrück Celle , Hanover , Wolfsburg , Magdeburg , Halle Dresden , Potsdam , Neuruppin and Berlin .

As far as it was tolerated, the ship sailed under the unofficial refugee flag in orange and black, which has been symbolically used as the flag of the refugee nation by the Refugee Olympic Team since the 2016 Olympics .

Actions at individual stations, integration

It was always part of the campaign that visitors were allowed to enter the ship and thus get a sensual impression of the confinement on board. A touring exhibition on the subject of migration and information on the situation of refugees during their flight and in refugee camps was offered in a yurt on land.

In most places, the project was accompanied by events organized by regional organizations. In Bremen, for example, it was integrated into a program run by the Bremen family network, in which Bremen refugee aid organizations and international aid organizers participated. Films, lectures, panel discussions and an extensive cultural program were offered.

In Münster, the ship project took place within the period of the sculpture exhibition 2017 Skulptur.Projekte . From August 22nd to 25th, the boat lay in the Münster harbor within sight of the sculpture On Water by the Turkish artist Ayşe Erkmen .

The arrival of the ship in Osnabrück took place parallel to the Steam Locomotive Festival 2017 and combined the traditional festival of the railway friends with the refugee project, supported by numerous informative events.

In Hanover, the Faust cultural center organized a comprehensive cultural program, which included children and adults who had fled from Hanover and at the same time provided information about the boat and its background. There and at numerous other stops on the trip, the staged reading “A Morning Before Lampedusa” (2013) by Antonio Umberto Riccó, which focuses on the 2013 boat accident off Lampedusa , was performed.

In total, more than 120 state, municipal and private organizations, institutions, clubs, associations and initiatives took part in the project.
