Morales is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Morales is located in the center of Cauca in the Provincia de Centro , 41 km from Popayán . The Río Cauca flows through the municipality . The municipality is bordered by Suárez and Buenos Aires in the north, Caldono and Piendamó in the east, Cajibío in the south and El Tambo and López de Micay in the west .

population

The municipality of Morales has 26,707 inhabitants, of which only 1553 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Morales was founded in 1806 with the purchase of the site and was initially called San Antonio de Padua del Ático . Morales was given the status of a district in 1852 and was a district of the Popayán Province until 1915 .

economy

The main industries of Morales are agriculture (especially coffee , sugar cane , corn , and bananas ), animal husbandry , mining ( gold and coal ) and the timber industry .
