Morris is located on the upper reaches of the Illinois River and 59 miles southwest of Chicago.

The population in 2000 was 95.3% white , 0.3% African American , 0.2% American Indian , 0.5% Asian and 2.4% other. 1.1% said they came from at least two of these groups. 6.9% of the population were Hispanics from any of the above groups.
25.0% were under 18 years of age, 8.7% between 18 and 24, 29.6% between 25 and 44, 20.4% between 45 and 64 and 16.3% 65 and older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 95.4 men, and 93.0 for over 18 year olds.

Great outbreak
Morris was the first town in the series of tornadoes called the Super Outbreak on March 3-4. April 1974 was affected. However, the destruction in Morris was relatively minor compared to other locations.
