action

Alex Fletcher, who lives in New York, was part of the band PoP , which enjoyed success in the 1980s. But while his ex-partner is successful after the separation and was even ennobled, his subsequent solo album was a flop, and so he appears at fairs, class reunions and in retro TV shows . But then he gets the offer from the pop star Cora Corman, who was once enthusiastic about his music. She now wants a new song from him for her new CD. However, this must be written, composed and recorded within three days. Cora also makes it clear that Alex is her favorite, but not the only commissioned composer.

Alex is skeptical as he is not particularly talented at writing lyrics, but he is under a lot of pressure because an important engagement has been canceled and so he is now more dependent on this song than ever. First he hires Greg Antonsky to work on the text. But Antonsky is extremely difficult and aggressive. Sophie Fisher, who happened to be present and who took care of Alex's plants on a substitute basis, demonstrated that she had a sense for Alex's ideas and also had talent as a copywriter. Therefore, Alex offers her to write the lyrics for his song, but she refuses.

Sophie is plagued by deep self-doubt after her ex-boyfriend, literature professor Sloan Cates, processes their time together in a bestselling novel. The main character of the novel is portrayed in a very negative way, and Sophie, who recognizes herself in the character, is badly hit. She now works for her sister Rhonda, who runs a diet center . Rhonda was once a huge fan of Alex and is thrilled that she can now meet him in person. Finally, Sophie lets herself be persuaded to write the text for Alex after all.

Together they manage to complete the song. In a hurry they create a demo CD and bring it to Cora just in time, who is enthusiastic about the composition. Sophie, Alex and his manager celebrate the success with a dinner in a restaurant. When Sloan Cates enters the restaurant, Alex encourages Sophie to speak to Cates. At first he appears extremely polite and pleased. But then he says that his novel is now being made into a film, and it becomes clear that he is not interested in a lengthy conversation with Sophie. However, Alex does not let himself get rid of and so there is a fight between the two. Sophie, impressed by Alex's commitment, accompanies him home. They spend a night together and a romance is emerging.

However, Cora wants to change the intro of the song. Sophie doesn't agree with the changes, but Alex doesn't care, because for him all that matters is the job. There is a scandal between Sophie and Alex, but it turns out that Cora is not accessible to Sophie's objections anyway. Since Cora wants one more verse to the song, but Sophie no longer works constructively, Sophie and Alex fall apart.

When Alex shows up alone in the recording studio the next day, he is amazed to discover that Sophie has written a new verse after all. At her concert in Madison Square Garden , Cora wants to introduce the new song together with Alex. Sophie and her sister Rhonda are also in the audience. When Cora announces a new song, but only gives Alex Fletcher as the author, Sophie is upset and upset.

When she wants to leave the hall, she hears that Alex is playing a completely different song. He composed and wrote it for Sophie and sings about their time together and how much they mean to him. Moved, Sophie comes backstage and makes up with Alex. Finally their song is played, but in the original arrangement: Alex was able to convince Cora that the original version of the song is much better. Towards the end of the song, Alex leaves the stage and kisses Sophie while Cora finishes the song alone.

In the credits you learn, among other things, that the film adaptation of Cates' novel flopped and that Alex's ex-partner Colin Thompson has health problems, while Sophie and Alex are now successful together.

Reviews

James Berardinelli said that the characters in this film are believable and more realistic than in many comparable films. Right in the heart is always appealing, often witty and occasionally funny, but would not turn skeptics and cynics into sentimental people. The film does not manage to achieve a top position in the ranking of romantic comedies . But it ranks high enough that anyone with a weakness for the genre should take a look.

Rex Reed told the New York Observer that the film was not a landmark in film history, but after an overabundance of alleged comedies, this romantic comedy is a perfect warm-hearted antidote to wintry boredom. The chemistry between Barrymore and Grant is something very rare in today's comedy fiasco.

Isabella Reicher wrote in Der Standard : “Director Marc Lawrence - who already paired Grant with Sandra Bullock in Two Weeks Notice - staged this formula cinema romance in a visually completely inconspicuous manner. For this he has come up with a reasonably original starting point and has also oriented himself on the dynamic blows of classic screwball comedies . - Grant does not fall out of his traditional parade role, but adds comic nuances with some self-irony. His loyal fans will appreciate that. "

In the Philadelphia Inquirer , Carrie Rickey calls the film a bitter-sweet satire of the music industry and says it is simply irresistible.

The lexicon of the international film judges: "Romantic comedy with accurate satirical swipes at the show industry and the music business, which cannot keep up its high initial pace, but convinces with lovingly drawn characters with the courage to self-irony."

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
