NBCUniversal, LLC (until late 2010 NBC Universal, Inc. ) is an American media company founded in 2004 and headquartered in New York City . The company emerged from the merger of the General Electric subsidiary National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and the entertainment division of the former Vivendi Universal without the Universal Music Group , with the majority going to General Electric. NBCUniversal is the third largest media company in the world after Time Warner and Viacom and ahead of the Walt Disney Company . In 2009 the company had sales of $ 15.436 billion and profits of $ 2.264 billion, and employed more than 16,000 people.

In early December 2009, the American cable operator Comcast took over a 51 percent stake in NBCUniversal for $ 6.5 billion; 49 percent remained with General Electric , while Vivendi sold all remaining shares. When Comcast joined NBC Universal, Inc. in early 2011, there were numerous changes. There was a relaunch of the logo, the peacock that has shaped the company for many years is no longer part of the company logo. Numerous Comcast broadcasters became part of the new NBCUniversal, LLC. The Comcast entry also had an impact on the two foreign subsidiaries NBCUniversal Global Networks and NBCUniversal Global Networks Germany. These operated from 2011 to 2016 under the common umbrella of Universal Networks International. Since autumn 2016 they have been operating under the name NBCUniversal International Networks .

On February 12, 2013, Comcast announced that it would also take over the remaining 49 percent of NBCUniversal's shares from General Electric. The agreed price for this was around 16.7 billion US dollars, of which 11.4 billion was in cash. The deal should be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2013.
