action

The film begins with a farewell scene: Pastor Wilhelm Lüders leaves the (fictional) mission station in Zumanda (Africa) and is bid farewell by a local choir with "Must i, must i go to the city center". While the choir is still singing, Wilhelm gets into the car; the driver accelerates too much, so that the chorus disappears coughing in a cloud of dust.

Parallel to this action, the scenery changes to the (also fictional) place Freudenstedt. There, in the House of Pleasure "Moby Dick" dies Catholic priest in bed the "silent Doris". The manageress Rosi then calls Karl "Charly" Lüders - the brother of Pastor Wilhelm - and tells him about the deceased. Charly, actually the man behind the scenes, goes straight to the "Moby Dick" and, together with the bartender Fred, brings the pastor's body to the rectory . Before they put the corpse there, Charly takes a large amount of cash from the pastor's wallet - the pastor did not pay for the services used in the "Moby Dick". Back at the brothel, he hands Rosi the bills, but she doesn't want to take them. As the conversation between Charly and Rosi continues, it becomes clear that Charly seems to be suffering from potency problems.

The next morning Elisabeth, the housekeeper in the parsonage, finds the pastor's body in a rocking chair. She then calls the bishop , who is preparing for a golf tournament in the (fictional) Vecchia Romagna in his bishop's palace . The bishop cynically notes the pastor's death (“The Lord gave it, the Lord took it”) and describes the desired character traits of the successor with golf metaphors. Since he would like to have a priest who has just returned from his mission, the episcopal secretary Bollmann chose Wilhelm Lüders.

Wilhelm Lüders arrives in Freudenstedt in a new setting. Since he is perceived as a threat by a sleeping taxi driver, the police have to free him from this predicament and bring him to the rectory. Elisabeth is waiting for him there in a dress through which her white underwear shines. In this situation Wilhelm turns out to be a typically conservative Catholic priest who asks Elisabeth to wear something else. Despite his conservative attitude, Wilhelm promises that a breath of fresh air will move into the rectory with him. During the subsequent walk through the community, Wilhelm and Elisabeth meet a rock gang, and Wilhelm is hit twice in the face by the leader of the gang. On the further walk, the two pass the "Moby Dick". Wilhelm initially assumes that it is a fish restaurant; when he learns the truth of Elizabeth, he decides to take care of the closure of the brothel and turns to the local police chief, one originating from Saxony police chief inspector . The raid , which took place on the same evening , remained without any significant result, as Rosi got a tip from a friend at the police station.

Charly decides to kidnap the new pastor to prevent further raids. Together with Fred he breaks into the parsonage and finds out that it is his brother Wilhelm. Just as they want to bring Wilhelm to the "Moby Dick", Charly has to take on the role of pastor and anoint the sick . Of course, this is expected differently, as is the baptism the following morning. In the meantime, Wilhelm is held captive in "Moby Dick"; however, the prostitute Doris forgets to turn on the camera for the compromising video sent to the bishop. When Charly finds out about this mishap, he feels it is his duty to double his brother for the video, but fails. Then he drives for his mother's birthday and tells Fred to hold Wilhelm down with chloroform . Due to Fred's inability, Wilhelm manages to escape from the "Moby Dick" and also to show up at the birthday, so that the two brothers now meet.

In the meantime, Rosi has sent the video of Charly and her to the bishop. In order to achieve the necessary emphasis, Charly goes to the bishop personally to ask Wilhelm to be transferred back to the mission. The real Wilhelm is also on his way to the bishop, because he has received a summons. The bishop first talks to Charly. When he has left the bishop's palace, the bishop calls for Wilhelm again; this time the real Wilhelm comes to the audience and is confronted with Charly and Rosi's video. When the bishop asked where the "Moby Dick" was located, it turned out that it was a diocese house .

Charly waits for Wilhelm in front of the bishop's palace and takes him back to Freudenstedt. There Charly blackmailed his brother: he should tell the chief inspector that he has changed his mind about the "Moby Dick", otherwise the bishop will receive a new sex video every day. Legionnaire Leo receives a letter in a Foreign Legion camp . This letter shows that Leo is the brother of Charly and Wilhelm and was robbed by a nurse . Leo then plans to flee the Legion to look for his family.

In the meantime, there has been repeated raids in Freudenstedt, and Wilhelm inevitably allows himself to be extorted from his brother. The chief inspector meets his niece in "Moby Dick", who asks him about his Stasi past. Charly records this statement with a video camera and has thus solved the problem with the raids. Nevertheless, he stuns Wilhelm so that he can no longer cause him any trouble. Charly spends the night with Elisabeth in the rectory and gives a sermon at morning mass that makes the congregation laugh with her cabaret style . Wilhelm, who was woken up by Rosi, rushes to church, but comes too late. Leo, who has meanwhile arrived in Freudenstedt, is tracked down and taken prisoner by two Foreign Legionnaires assigned to him.

While taking a walk with Rosi, Wilhelm doubts the meaning of his life, since his brother can do everything better, even preaching. Rosi then tells Wilhelm that Charly is not the better at one thing, namely sex. Wilhelm then wants to start a family with Rosi. Bollmann informs the bishop about the conditions in the Freudenstedt parish. The bishop recognizes a mixture of Drewermann and Ranke-Heinemann and therefore wants to send Wilhelm back to the mission.

Back at "Moby Dick", Wilhelm is supposed to calm down a brothel visitor with SM preferences. In conversation with the visitor, Wilhelm innocently talks about masochistic traditions in church history, whereupon the visitor gets an orgasm . As a thank you, Wilhelm receives a 1000 DM note. In the meantime, mother Lüders appears in the rectory and discovers her son Charly's double play. When Wilhelm gives a round of bars in the "Moby Dick", the bishop and brother Bollmann appear: Wilhelm is sent back to the mission and the bar is closed for personal use. When mother Lüders enters the "Moby Dick" with Charly and Elisabeth, the connections are unraveled: the bishop is the father of Charly, Wilhelm and Leo, but he always paid - mother Lüders worked as a prostitute herself. In the end there is a big shootout when the two Foreign Legionaries try to arrest Leo. But Leo can put both of them out of action, so that the family reunions. The film ends with its title: "But not with Leo."

Trivia and running gags

  • Some scenes were shot in Münster - especially at the time when Prussia Münster won the amateur championship. The film crew was unable to calm down the Prussian fans celebrating on the Prinzipalmarkt .
  • The Laurentius Church in Warendorf served as St. George's Church , where other scenes were also filmed.
  • On the one hand, the bishop's golf training breaks the interior of the episcopal palace, and on the other hand passers-by are injured.
  • Whenever the rocker gang and Wilhelm / Charly meet on the market square, a resident calls down from his window whether he should notify the police. This is called "Shut up, Grandpa!" as well as throwing beer cans at the window.
  • In both raids, the police officers park their emergency vehicles so inconveniently that in one case there is a rear-end collision and in the other case it is impossible to get out.
  • All things that Fred touches break a little later.
  • In the film there are several allusions to the homosexuality of the episcopal secretary Bollmann.
  • Herbert Feuerstein quotes Asbach Uralt's advertising slogan in a modified form ("When so much good happens to you, it's worth a bubbly"). His sitting position and posture are reminiscent of his commercials for Black Breakfast Grains .
  • Herbert Feuerstein and Harald Schmidt's clothes with black sunglasses are reminiscent of the film Blues Brothers . Reinforced by the statement: We are traveling in the name of the Lord.

Reviews

  • "After Sister Whoopi, Brother Jürgen is now cleaning up behind ailing church walls." - Treffpunkt Kino (1994)
  • “Not even two Grimme Prize winners save this comedy - neither quota emperor Jürgen von der Lippe (...) nor cult talker Harald Schmidt (...), both actually guarantors for witty humor and accurate punch lines, reach their usual level. From Kaiser-Roland - the one with the records with the flat platitudes - and pop star Isabel Varell, you didn't expect anything better anyway. Kugelblitz Dirk Bach plays, as always, only Dirk Bach and Herbert Feuerstein (...) had their best times even before this unsuccessful mix-up joke. Brief summary: If you really want to laugh, go to the basement that evening. It is definitely funnier! ”- Prisma -Online film database
