Nico Georgiadis (born January 22, 1996 in Bülach ) is a Swiss chess player . In Swiss chess history he was the youngest federal champion, FIDE champion and international champion .

Life

Nico Georgiadis attended primary school in Schindellegi and then the Einsiedeln Abbey School . He studied journalism and communication science at the University of Zurich . His coaches in chess were Beat Züger and Artur Jussupow . He also received training from Francisco Vallejo Pons .

successes

His first chess club was the Wädenswil chess club when he was six years old . In the Swiss Federal Chess League , playing for ASK Winterthur , he made his first appearance in the 2009/10 season . In the National League A he plays for the chess company Winterthur . He won the Swiss group championship with ASK Winterthur in 2012 and 2015 , and the Swiss team championship in 2017 with SG Winterthur .

In the German Chess Bundesliga he played in the 2014/15 season when Schachgesellschaft Solingen , in the season 2016/17 for the SV Griesheim and in the season 2019/20 for FC Bayern Munich . In the Austrian Bundesliga , Georgiadis has been a member of SC Sparkasse Götzis since the 2015/16 season .

In 2008 he won the Swiss U12 championship in Bern , in 2009 in Echallens he was U14 champion, and in 2010 after four tournaments. He won the Swiss Schoolchildren's Championship in Lenzerheide in 2010 and in Leukerbad in 2011 . Also in 2011 he won the Swiss Junior Championship (U18) in Leukerbad. He won the national championship in Olten in 2011 as the youngest winner in the history of the national championships, which have been held since 1924.

For the Swiss U16 national team he played at the Youth Olympics in Mersin in 2008 (board 3 of the 2nd team) and 2010 in Burdur (board 1 of the 1st team). At the U18 European Team Championships in Maribor in 2013 , Switzerland received the silver medal with Nico Georgiadis on the top board, while he also received an individual silver medal for his result of 4.5 out of 7 (the gold medal went to Kamil Dragun ).

Georgiadis has been a member of the Swiss national team since 2013 and took part in the 2014 and 2016 Chess Olympiads and the 2013 and 2015 European Team Championships.

In 2011, Nico Georgiadis received the title of FIDE Master when he was a younger Swiss citizen. He has been the international champion since October 2013, also as the youngest Swiss player in Swiss chess history. He achieved the norms for this in the 2012 season of the National League with over-fulfillment, at the Young Masters in Zug in September 2013, where he won against grandmaster Dmitry Svetushkin , among others , and at the U20 World Cup in İzmit that same month .

At the FIDE Congress 2016, Georgiadis was named Grand Master on the condition that he achieved an Elo rating of at least 2500. He met this condition through his performance at the GM tournament in Biel 2017. He met the required standards in April 2014 at the Dubai Masters , in December 2014 at the Qatar Masters Open in Doha and in the 2015/16 season of the Austrian Bundesliga.
