Nicolás Ardito Barletta Vallarino (born August 21, 1938 in Las Tablas ) was the 39th President of Panama .

Life

Barletta is the son of the Mayor of Panama City . He graduated from North Carolina State University , where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering and an M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics . 1971 received a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago . He was a minister in various Panamanian governments under Omar Torrijos . From 1978 to 1984 he was World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean .

In 1984 he stood as a candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Democrático for the presidential elections, to which the incumbent Jorge Illueca did not run. Barletta won the election with a wafer-thin majority of 1,713 votes against Arnulfo Arias , with allegations of election fraud that earned him the nickname Fraudito . On October 11, 1984, he took over the office of President, but was only able to stay in office until September 28, 1985. His successor was Eric Arturo Delvalle .

Vallarino was supported by Manuel Noriega , the then military chief and influential drug dealer. Vallarino was the first of the so-called “Kleenex presidents” who had hardly any relevant power over the de facto ruler of Panama, Noriega, and were mostly replaced after a short time.
