The transport and water GmbH (VWG) is a company in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) . The business purpose is bus transport and the city's water supply. 74% of the company's shareholders are the City of Oldenburg and 26% are EWE AG , which is responsible for the energy and power supply in Oldenburg.

Historical

From 1933 to 1985 city traffic in Oldenburg was carried out by the company Oldenburger Vorortbahnen Pekol GmbH , which operated several trolleybus routes between 1936 and 1957.

Bus travel in Oldenburg in the 1980s and 1990s

The grass-green MAN SL 200 and Mercedes-Benz O 305 vehicles were characteristic of bus transport in the 1980s and early 1990s , with car no. 66, which advertised the “Zum Hengelbräu” brewery, standing out. The SL 200 with car number 67 (built in 1984) advertised an Oldenburg shoe store and from then on could be viewed as a museum bus in the Pekol bus museum, which no longer exists today.

In 1987, a new era of comfortable bus driving was ushered in with the purchase of ten Mercedes O 405 omnibuses. VWG also purchased MAN SL 202 buses. In 1989, Mercedes buses with a lift went for the first time to enable people with reduced mobility to travel by bus. Barrier-free bus travel was first possible in 1994 when eight Mercedes low-floor buses were purchased. In the 90s it was customary for the few female bus drivers who drove in Oldenburg to wear a VWG scarf. A Citaro was first seen in the Oldenburg cityscape in 1999; This new-generation Mercedesbus is the vehicle that was to shape the Oldenburg cityscape in the new millennium.

Bus travel in Oldenburg after the turn of the millennium

In 2001 the previous managing director Petershagen retired. Michael Emschermann has been the new managing director since then. He initiated a restructuring of the Oldenburg bus network that was put into practice in 2002. He also initiated the acquisition of the MAN NL 263 comfort buses , which for the first time also had air conditioning. They were followed by numerous air-conditioned Citaro buses in 2003. In 2004, a night bus network was introduced in Oldenburg . Since 2005, VWG has only purchased air-conditioned natural gas buses as new vehicles .

The Oldenburg terminal stops are located in "quiet zones" specially geared to the regeneration needs of the driving staff, which also usually have a personal toilet with a water flush.

From the natural gas articulated buses from Nordbus GmbH with the car number 090 to 095, which were used in October 2009, the interior was equipped with cameras for the first time, which is also annotated on the entrance door: "Video-monitored for your safety". These vehicles were also equipped for the first time with TFT indoor monitors, on which the line number is displayed in addition to the next five stops as well as the destination and final stop.

In 2010 the VWG, which was founded in 1985, celebrates its 25th anniversary. In an interview with the managing director Michael Emschermann published in the Nordwest-Zeitung , it became clear that VWG will purchase more natural gas buses by 2016; In the distant future, however, all buses are to run with an electric motor. The vehicles in Oldenburg have an economic useful life of eleven to thirteen years.

The last diesel-powered bus was taken out of service in 2016. Under the influence of the increasing population of Oldenburg and the effects of pollutant emissions, VWG put 26 new natural gas-powered buses into operation in autumn 2018. They replaced older buses powered by natural gas, and the number of vehicles increased from 97 to 103 vehicles. Another 25 new vehicles should be added in 2019, bringing the number to 111 vehicles. In the medium term, the focus will not be on buses with drive energy storage in electric batteries , but with hydrogen as the energy carrier .

Line history

Change of offer in 2002

In the summer of 2002 the city bus route 303 served the Bahnhofsallee and the Kreyen-Centrum on the way to Krusenbusch for the first time.

The operation of Wahnbeck was ensured between 2002 and 2003 by the city bus route 314, which drove there from Hundsmühlen via Nadorster Straße, the Rennplatz, Ohmstede and Etzhorn. In the evening during this period, line 306 was extended from the university via Beverbäkstraße and the barracks district to Wahnbek.

The operation of the Ostring was ensured for the first time during the day by the new line 324, which went to Hundsmühlen, and in the evening by the 309 coming from Petersfehn.

Change of offer in 2008

In order to connect the university more directly to the train station and central bus station, the 306 and 310 lines in the inner city area were streamlined at the end of 2008, which shortened the journey time by 5 minutes. The missing branches were taken over from the line 309 to Wahnbek and 314 to the Ostring.

Expansion of the range in 2011

Since the end of June 2011, there has been a 30-minute interval on all main lines in the evenings, as the VWG attaches particular importance to evening leisure traffic. Due to the increased frequency, the rallies at the main transfer point Lappan were omitted, so that the buses arrive there at different times. Another innovation was that the terminal stops in the villages of Wildenloh and Sandkrug / Hatterwüsting were also served until midnight for the first time.

The regular Park & Ride traffic, however, ended in the same year. With this, the VWG reacted to the improper use of the Park & Ride tickets by residents of the residential areas that were close to the Park & Ride spaces.

Expansion of the range in 2015

With the timetable change in June 2015, two new lines were introduced, various branches of the line were linked differently and line numbers were changed.

The Oldenburg Clinic and the Kreyenbrück settlement areas were served by the new lines 311 and 321 every 10 minutes. The new line 318 connected the Eversten-West development area with the city center via the Eversten main street. Line 313, from Krusenbusch over the street Am Bahndamm and through Osternburg to the city center, was created by splitting up the previous line 302 in the Osternburg area, whereby the 302 received a partially new route through the Tweelbäke industrial area. The line branches in the villages of Wahnbek and Metjendorf were swapped, so that the new line 323 ran from Wahnbeker Nordkreuz to Krusenbusch, while the new line 329 from Metjendorf-Heidkamp and Metjendorf-Ofenerfeld through the city center and Bloherfelde to Petersfehn, Wildenloh and Eschenplatz. Line 329 served three different end stations at both ends. The line numbers 303, 309 and 312 were omitted.

Due to the use of the Blankenburg monastery as an initial reception facility for the state of Lower Saxony, line 316 has been running every hour to the central bus station since November 1, 2015. This connection was discontinued in 2011 due to a lack of demand and replaced by a call line taxi .

Expansion of the range in 2018

With the timetable change in December 2018, the offer was expanded in the direction of the neighboring municipalities in the Oldenburg district. In addition to line 315, another line was introduced to Hatterwüsting with the 325, which has the same route over large parts and thus creates a 30-minute cycle for numerous stops.

Wardenburg is served by the 320 line every hour in addition to the 280 regional bus. In addition, journeys on line 314, which previously ended at the canal bridge, have been extended in a large curve via Südmoslesfehn, Achternmeer, Westerholt and Oberlethe to Wardenburg.

Offer expansion 2019

With the use of eight new vehicles, the connections to the Ammerland district were improved. For this purpose, the regional bus routes 330, 340 and 350, which run from the Oldenburg central bus station to the surrounding area, have been more closely integrated into inner-city traffic. They offer a continuous half-hourly service even on weekends and into the late evening hours, with operation on weekends and public holidays starting later than on working days. The greatly expanded offer is financially secured for an initial two years.

Line 330 from Wiefelstede - Conneforde , via Heidkamp and Metjendorf, was extended beyond the central bus station to Drielake and replaced line 307. Its operations were transferred from the Hanekamp company to VWG.

Line 340 from Wiefelstede or Jaderberg , each via Rastede, was extended beyond the central bus station via IKEA to Blankenburg monastery and replaced the VWG lines 316 and 317. Here, VWG handed over management to the Hanekamp company.

Line 350 is operated by two companies: VWG runs every hour from Oldenburg to Bad Zwischenahn, Gerdes Reisen runs every hour from Oldenburg via Bad Zwischenahn to Westerstede. Together, there is a half-hourly service between Oldenburg and Bad Zwischenahn, which also serves the Famila XXL Wechloy shopping center. The trips on the 310 city line, which previously ran parallel to Wehnen, were withdrawn to the Dürerstraße stop in Ofen, with the exception of morning rush hour traffic, and no longer serve the Karl Jaspers Clinic and Wehnen.

The previous line 329 has been split up: the new line 329 only serves the section Lappan - ZOB - Alexanderstraße - Am Alexanderhaus. Line 313 no longer goes to BBS Wechloy, but via Wiefelstede-Metjendorf to Ofenerfeld. With the regional line 330, which ensures the operation of the Heidkamp area, both fit into an overall concept for Alexanderstraße, so that the half-hourly lines 330, 313, 329 and 302 result in a 7.5-minute cycle. During the off-peak hours, a gap arose in the fine development of the areas from Leuchtenburger Strasse to Ofenerfeld, which was remedied in January 2020 by extending line 324.

The new line 309 took over the section of the old line 329 via Bloherfelder Straße, which is now used every ten minutes. In addition to the previous western endpoints Petersfehn and Wildenloh, the buses run a total of four times an hour as a ring to Friedrichsfehn, and the endpoint Eschenplatz will also be served every 30 minutes for the first time.

Limitations 2020

In the initial phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany, front entry was initially prohibited from mid-March 2020 to protect drivers, and tickets could not be purchased in the vehicle. From the night of March 21, the entire offer was reduced in view of the sharp drop in passenger demand. Operation was ensured on the basis of the Sunday schedule, with daily operating times from around 5 a.m. to midnight. The lines were mostly served every half hour, there was no need for business or school transport.

In March and April, passenger numbers fell to around 20 percent compared to the previous year. Even after the normal schedule has been restored on April 27, 2020, night bus traffic will remain suspended until further notice. From May 13th, it was possible to buy tickets again in the vehicle, at the same time the number of passengers began to recover and at the end of July 2020 were around 60 percent of the previous year's level.

Corporate structure in the bus sector

Former VWG subsidiary Nordbus

The Oldenburg company Nordbus was founded in 2000 by Edzards, Esens, and merged with VWG in 2016. Edzards' order trips for VWG Oldenburg were initially carried out via Nordbus. Nordbus received four cars from VWG for the services. At the beginning of 2002 Edzards withdrew from Oldenburg. VWG took over Nordbus as a wholly-owned subsidiary and has since then gradually expanded its mileage. As a result, the number of buses that were overwritten VWG vehicles or new vehicles in the form of modern natural gas buses increased continuously. Since 2007, all new vehicles have been registered either with the Nordbus subsidiary or the subcontractors and no longer with the parent company VWG. It was only in 2014 that new vehicles were registered for the first time to the parent company VWG: These are the MAN buses with the radio numbers 144 to 147.

The six MAN Lion's City natural gas intercity buses drove for many years on the intercity bus route 440 ("Weser Sprinter") from Oldenburg to Brake and from there alternately to Nordenham and Bremerhaven. However, since the timetable change on September 3, 2015, the VWG subsidiary Nordbus no longer used this route, so that from now on the intercity buses will only be used in city bus traffic.

After 15 years, the Mercedes 0405 articulated buses purchased in 1994, which were in perfect technical condition to the end, were retired and replaced by several Citaro articulated natural gas buses with the car numbers 090 to 093. In addition, Nordbus owned an articulated MAN natural gas bus, which was symbolically referred to as the “biogas bus”, especially since its advertising indicated that biogas was added to the natural gas mixture, an innovative innovation that can reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 30%.

The natural gas Citaro with the car number 817 was a special feature: after the EWE Baskets became German champions in 2009, the association received a congratulation in the form of an outdoor advertisement for this north bus car as a sign of recognition. In addition, all players in the EWE baskets signed on the ceiling in the interior of the bus.

The Nordbus drivers were bound to a different tariff system than the drivers of the parent company.

Subcontractors

In addition to VWG, city bus traffic in Oldenburg is ensured by the following subcontractors :

  • Hanekamp Busreisen , Cloppenburg
  • Wilmering, Vechta (formerly: Wolters Buslinien)
  • Michael Büsing Busbetrieb (MBB), Rastede
  • Pfeiffer Reisen, Bad Zwischenahn

Since 2009, all of the subcontractors who drive Oldenburg's regular services on behalf of VWG no longer buy their own buses, but rent new vehicles from VWG.

vehicles

The coach numbers of the buses are usually not chosen arbitrarily, but allow conclusions to be drawn about the year the bus was purchased. The Citaro cars no. 002-006 were acquired in 2000, the MAN-NLs no. 021-026 in 2002 and the natural gas Citaros no. 811-817 in 2008. The car number 090 of the video-monitored Citaro articulated natural gas bus that was put into service at the end of 2009 also correlates with the year it was purchased.

In the mid-2010s, the last two digits of the year corresponded to the first two digits of the wagon number (2012: 120 to 124; 2013: 130 to 139, etc.). Since more than ten new buses have been purchased each year since 2018, the numbering was extended in these years (2018: 180 to 189, 380 to 388, 580 to 588). In a total of eleven cars of this year, including 187, 188 and 189, the natural gas drive is supported by an electric motor, for which a supercapacitor temporarily stores electrical energy generated during braking. Car 389 is a four-door articulated bus in test operation from 2019 to 2021, whose newly developed gas engine is also supported by an electric motor and should consume less drive energy thanks to the super capacitor and automatic start-stop .
