The Mercedes-Benz O 405 is a high-floor city bus from Daimler-Benz that was built in series from 1984 to 2001.

One-piece variant O 405

This vehicle belongs to the second generation of the VÖV standard bus and is the direct successor to the O 305 . At the same time, MAN also offered standardized 2nd generation VÖV buses. From Magirus-Deutz and Büssing (in contrast to the previous generation of VÖV-I buses) there was no longer a VÖV-II model competing with the Mercedes-Benz O 405, but the VÖV-II bus from Auwärter Neoplan was added. The MB O 405 proved to be very successful and was not only bought by many German transport companies , but also found numerous customers abroad, where the bus was mostly used with bodies from local manufacturers. Thanks to their robust construction and their reliability, the vehicles also enjoyed great popularity on the used market.

The direct successor was the low-floor O 405 N , produced from 1990, but production of the high-floor O 405 continued in parallel and did not end until autumn 2001. From 1997 the Citaro was also the successor to the O 405 city bus series.

Other variants

Articulated bus O 405 G

Parallel to MB O 405 was also articulated variant known as 405 G Mercedes-Benz O was called.

Natural gas powered bus O 405 CNG

Some O 405 were built with natural gas engines. This version was marked with the addition CNG ( O 405 CNG ). The chassis of the basic types O 405 and O 405 G were also produced as right-hand drive for export to Great Britain, South Africa and Australia.

O 405 T trolleybus

As with the predecessor model O 305, Mercedes-Benz explored the market for trolleybuses with the O 405 . However, only one trolleybus based on the O 405 was produced. This prototype, built in 1986, has electrical equipment from AEG and is known as the O 405 T (T stands for trolleybus).

The single item was mainly tested on the Esslingen am Neckar trolleybus and in 1991 also became the property of the Esslingen am Neckar municipal transport company (SVE). At the SVE it was added to the inventory under the car number 205. From February 16, 1989 to April 11, 1989, it was also in use with road number 128 on the Salzburg trolleybus . In October 2003 the car was handed over to the Sarajevo trolleybus operator, where it was used for a short time under number 4410. In May 2011 it was parked there in a non-operational state.

Double decker O 405 DD

The vehicle Falkenried (FFG) established already in 1982 as an alternative to SD 80 MAN / Waggon-Union a Stadtlinien- double-decker bus in front on the basis of the subsequent O-405 series. Two prototypes of this type were produced. A vehicle was stationed at the Mercedes-Benz branch in Berlin until 1995, where it served as a demonstration bus until it reached Hamburg as a sightseeing vehicle. In November 2008 one vehicle was scrapped, nothing is known about the whereabouts of the second vehicle, which served as an unapproved test vehicle.
