North Haven is a town in Knox County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 355 inhabitants in 515 households on an area of 213.65 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , North Haven has a total area of 213.65 km², of which 30.10 km² are land and 183.55 km² are water .
Geographical location
The town of North Haven comprises several islands in Penobscot Bay of the Atlantic Ocean . The larger and better known islands include: Babbidge Island , Burnt Island , Calderwood Island , North Haven Island (formerly North Fox Island) and Stimpsons Island . There are several lakes on North Haven Island , including Salt Pond and Fresh Pond . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
The town of North Haven was organized as an independent town on March 1, 1847. The town was initially founded as Fox Isle , but a short time later the name was changed to North Haven . It previously belonged to the town of Vinalhaven.
The area in the Atlantic to which today's town of North Haven belongs was already around 3300 BC. . Chr by Algonquian inhabited. Artifacts can be found in several archaeological sites on North Haven. The Algonquin, like the first European settlers, lived from fishing. Martin Pring, who in 1603 named the islands now called Vinahaven and North Haven, the Fox Islands , is considered to be the discoverer of the islands .
European settlers began to settle on the islands from 1760. The main source of income was fishing, but there was also agriculture. With nearly 1,000 residents, North Haven reached its highest population density in the mid-19th century. There was a clam and lobster factory on North Haven in the second half of the 19th century. In addition, boat building was one of the major industries. Today there are still two active shipyards on North Haven.
Since 1880 tourism developed on North Haven. First they came from Boston, later from New York and Philadelphia. A summer colony was established on both sides of The Fox Island Thoroughfare , on both Vinahaven and North Haven. later the settlement in Pulpit Harbor was added.

North Haven is only accessible by ferry from Rockland. There are local roads on North Haven Island.
Public facilities
There are no medical facilities or hospitals in North Haven. The closest are in Rockland and Camden.
North Haven is home to the North Haven Memorial Library . It goes back to a donation in 1883. It was initially in the rooms of a private home and moved to Memorial Town Hall in 1887. The name was changed from Bradley Association to North Haven Memorial Library in 1907 .
