The Upper Starzeltal and Zollerberg area is a landscape protection area designated by the Hechingen District Office on December 19, 1972 by ordinance in the area of the cities of Hechingen and Burladingen and the communities of Bisingen and Jungingen in the Zollernalb district .

location

The nature reserve Oberes Starzeltal and Zollerberg covers almost the entire area of the municipality of Jungingen, the west of the Burladingen urban area (districts Killer , Starzeln , Hausen , as well as parts of Ringingen , Salmendingen and Burladingen), the east of the Hechingen urban area (districts Schlatt , Boll , Stetten and a smaller part of Hechingen) and the areas around the Hohenzollern in the area of the municipality of Bisingen.

Landscape character

The area is largely forested. The Alb plateau around Salmendingen is characterized by agriculture and grassland use, as are the valleys around Hechingen and Burladingen. The slopes were traditionally used as sheep pastures and are therefore still characterized by juniper heaths and grasslands, which are interspersed with numerous springs due to their location in the Middle Jura. Striking elevations in the area are the Kornbühl near Salmendingen and the Hohenzollern near Zimmer . The area is traversed by the Starzel , which rises near Hausen in the Killertal.

history

The Zollerberg and its surroundings have been under landscape protection by ordinance since 1957.

The landscape protection area has been reduced in size several times since it was designated. The reason for this was the designation of several nature reserves, which led to a reduction of a total of 313 hectares. In addition, several planned building areas were removed from the landscape protection area in 1999.

Contiguous protected areas

Several nature reserves are embedded in the landscape protection area. The FFH area Reichenbach and Killertal between Hechingen and Burladingen is largely located in the landscape protection area. The FFH areas around Albstadt , areas between Bisingen, Haigerloch and Rosenfeld , Salmendingen / Sonnenbühl and Albvorland near Mössingen and Reutlingen also have shares in the area. Some parts of the landscape protection area belong to the bird sanctuary Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley .

The landscape protection area Oberes Starzeltal and Zollerberg borders directly on the landscape protection areas Albstadt-Bitz in the south and Albrand in the north.
