The village of Ohrdorf is located in Lower Saxony in the Gifhorn district and belongs to the city of Wittingen .

history

Ohrdorf was mentioned for the first time in 1112 as Adorp (document book of the Hochstift Halberstadt, I, 136), as Ordorpe after 1209 (in the Halberstadt bishops' chronicles , the Gesta episcoporum Halberstadensium , created between 1208 and 1215 ). Other medieval place name forms were Orthorp , Wenedisches Ordorp , Ordorp apud Wittinge , Ordorppe and Ordorff.

The village owes its name to the river Ohre , which rises near the village and flows north of Magdeburg into the Elbe . During the GDR era, the inner-German border ran in the middle of the Ohre not far from the village. The closest place on the East German side was Haselhorst , it was no longer directly accessible from Ohrdorf from the beginning of the 1950s; the road connection was not restored until 1990.

On March 1, 1974, the communities Boitzenhagen , Plastau , Radenbeck , Schneflingen , Teschendorf and Zasenbeck were incorporated into the community of Ohrdorf. Just one month later, on April 1, 1974, this enlarged community was dissolved and integrated into the city of Wittingen.

Culture and sights

  • The Laurentius Church, built in 1235, is a stone church and has a Gothic winged altar from 1470. According to legend, the altar was intended for a church in Wittingen. The car that transported the altar had a broken wheel in Ohrdorf, which the people of Ohrdorf took advantage of to get the driver drunk and to move the altar into their own church. The pulpit dates from 1700, the ceiling paintings from 1711.
  • There is an inhabited windmill north of Ohrdorf , which was built in 1867 as a brick-built tower dutchman.
