19 athletes from British India competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles under the All-Indian flag for international comparison. There were 15 players of the Indian men's national hockey team who won the gold medal , three more men fought as track and field athletes, one was registered as a swimmer.

history

A total of around 2000 athletes from 37 countries took part in the X. Olympic Games and measured their strength in 18 sports such as boxing , football , athletics with decathlon and marathon running , fencing , weightlifting , modern pentathlon , cycling , riding , swimming , gymnastics , water polo , Diving , rowing , sailing .

For field hockey the men, three teams had registered, including favorites from British India, the forerunner of the Republic of India until 1947. The all-Indian hockey team included the following participants:

Richard Allen , Muhammad Aslam , Lal Bokhari (standard bearer), Frank Brewin , Richard Carr , Leslie Hammond (defense attorney), Arthur Charles Hind (goalie), Sayed Jaffar , Masud Minhas , Broome Pinniger , Gurmit Singh , Roop Singh , William Sullivan , Dhyan Chand (captain and attacker) and Carlyle Tapsell (defender).

The team defeated the US teams 24-1 in quick and precise passes and the Japanese clearly 11-1 in the final. In total, only three teams had registered their participation for this competition, besides India and Japan this was the host country USA. Significantly more hockey teams took part in the previous Summer Olympics, while Los Angeles did not have the favorite European countries such as Holland , Germany or England . Regarding the hockey tournament at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, reports on the game of the Indians say:

“For all previous terms, her skills were fantastic. Her positional play, her technique, her speed are amazing. Nobody was able to score a single goal against this wonderful team, while the Indians themselves scored 29 goals. Everything was in the shadow of these artists. "

The following assessment was made in advance for 1932: “No country in the world is in a position to contest the Indians for the gold medal.” However, only four players left from the winning team of 1928, the brilliant goalkeeper Allen from what was then the province of Bengal , sat on the bench due to an injury.

Roop Singh (12) scored the most goals, followed by Dhyan Cahnd (7) and Gurmit Singh (3).

Indian hockey players competing for the 1932 Olympic victory

The organizers made this absolute favorite role and the expensive and long journey of at least 16 players for a functioning team the reason why only three teams competed against each other this year (1932). The USA team consisted mostly of inexperienced players from other sports and students from Princeton University .

The other competitors from India were the athletes Mehar Chand Dhwan (triple jump, 4 × 100 m relay run), Bunoo Sutton (100 m sprint, 110 m hurdles, 4 × 100 m relay run) and Ronald Vernieux (100 and 200 -m sprint, 4 × 100 m relay run) and the swimmer Nalin Malik (freestyle, 400 m and 1500 m). One of the hockey players acted as the fourth relay runner. None of these athletes won a medal, but they finished 4th or 5th.
