The favorites were the French Jean-Paul Villain, European champion from 1971 , the world record holder Kerry O'Brien, Australia, and the three Kenyans Amos Biwott, Olympic champion from 1968 , Kipchoge Keino, and others. a. 1968 Olympic champion over 1500 meters , and Ben Jipcho. In addition, the Finn Tapio Kantanen came after his Olympic record in the first heat. From this circle of favorites O'Brien could not qualify for the final, he had to cancel his run-up.

The final race was not approached particularly quickly. The first 1000 meters were covered in 2:54 minutes, the second 1000 meter section was even slower at 3:00 minutes. At the front was the Pole Bronislaw Malinowski, who now accelerated the pace and with two laps to go there was a small gap to his competitors. The field was stretched wide. On the penultimate lap, Malinowski, the three Kenyans, the Finn Kantanen and the Czechoslovak Dušan Moravčík formed a leading group of six runners. At the beginning of the last lap, Keino took the lead, Jipcho was behind. Surprisingly, Biwott had already fallen back a bit here. Keino's long spurt could now only be followed by Jipcho and Kantanen. But already in the finish curve Kipchoge Keino broke away from his last pursuers and ran towards the Olympic victory. There was a close duel for the silver medal. Ben Jipcho came in second and the bronze went to Tapio Kantanen two tenths of a second behind. Bronisław Malinowski was fourth, Dušan Moravčík fifth. Kipchoge Keino covered the last 1000 meters in a fast 2:38 minutes and improved Amos Biwott's Olympic record from the fourth heat by two tenths of a second.

Kipchoge Keino and Ben Jipcho ran for the second Kenyan double success in a row in this competition.
