final

Werner Schildhauer, GDR, was Olympic gold medalist

Date: July 27, 1980, 7:35 p.m.

Four-time Olympic champion Lasse Virén was back, but his preliminary work did not necessarily make him appear among the medal contenders. There were other long distance runners like the Ethiopian Miruts Yifter, who had become Olympic Knight at this distance in Munich in 1972 . Virén's compatriot Martti Vainio, the reigning European champion, and Briton Brendan Foster, Olympic Knight in 1976 , were among the promising candidates.

The first half of the final race was not particularly brisk, but the pace changed over and over again. After 4000 meters, the three Ethiopians Yifter, Mohamed Kedir and Tolossa Kotu increased the pace. Slowly the field tore apart and a nine-person leading group formed. With nine laps to go, Virén took the lead for a short time. But the Finn no longer had the form of the two previous games, the Ethiopians now determined the race again. In the course of the next few laps the leading group got smaller. Again and again there were irregular tempo intensifications by the Ethiopians, which were very grueling. With four laps to go, five runners were still ahead: the three Ethiopians and the two Finns Virén and Kaarlo Maaninka, who surprisingly kept up and even briefly took the lead 1000 meters from the finish. But Yifter and Kedir quickly passed him again. On the penultimate lap, Virén then moved forward, but at the beginning of the last lap, Kedir passed him. These five runners stayed together up to 300 meters from the finish line with constantly changing guides, when Yifter irresistibly put on his final sprint. None of his opponents had anything to oppose him and Miruts Yifter ran safely to the Olympic victory. Now Lasse Virén also had no chance to keep the pace of the group behind Yifter. Kaarlo Maaninka, on the other hand, passed the two remaining Ethiopians and won the silver medal ahead of Mohamed Kedir. Tolossa Kotu finished fourth, Lasse Virén finished fifth.

Miruts Yifter was the first Ethiopian Olympic champion over 10,000 meters .
