The Soviet Union took part in the VIII Winter Olympics in 1960 in the US Squaw Valley Ski Resort with a delegation of 62 athletes in eight disciplines, including 48 men and 14 women. With seven gold, five silver and nine bronze medals, the Soviet Union was the most successful nation at the Games.
The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the ice hockey player Nikolai Sologubow .
