Simon Ammann's success as the first Swiss Olympic ski jumping champion was one of the biggest surprises at the Salt Lake City Games: Ammann, who was just 20 years old, won the Olympic Games without having previously won a World Cup ski jumping event. His best placement up until then had been two second places at the start of the season.

After his surprising victory on the normal hill, Simon Ammann also won the jumping on the large hill, this time by a clear margin. This makes him, alongside Matti Nykänen in 1988 and Kamil Stoch in 2014, the only ski jumper to win both individual Olympic competitions. Ammann even repeated this feat in 2010.

With the smallest possible advantage of 0.1 points (less than ten centimeters), the German team won over Finland. The favored Austrians surprisingly had to give Slovenia the bronze medal. Simon Ammann (two golds) and Adam Małysz (silver and bronze), who dominated the individual competitions, could not stand out due to their weaker teammates from Switzerland and Poland.
