history

At the end of the 19th century, the royal seat of Karlsruhe opened up parts of what is now the eastern part of the city as a building area. To this day, the district has been shaped by the juxtaposition of trade, handcraft and living.

The area south of Durlacher Allee , the Gottesaue, has much older roots . The Benedictine monastery Gottesaue was founded here in 1094. After its secularization in the course of the Reformation in the 16th century, Gottesaue Castle was built in its place , which was rebuilt between 1982 and 1989 and today serves as the domicile of the State University of Music.
