overview
history
In 1930 the Salesians of Don Bosco acquired the former Benediktbeuern monastery . In the following year, the original cell of the Philosophical-Theological College (PTH) was initially founded in the form of a 'Theological College' for the Salesian order members. In 1970 the PTH was affiliated to the Faculty of Theology and in 1976 to the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome.
In 1981 the PTH was officially recognized as a non-governmental academic university. In 1990 she received the state right to award doctorates in the field of Catholic theology and in 1992 the right to award doctorates in the church. In the same year the survey to the theological faculty took place . From 2000 the PTH Benediktbeuern also had the right to habilitation.
Cessation of teaching and studying
In April 2010, the German province of the Salesians Don Bosco announced that the PTH will no longer accept new students in the diploma course in theology from the winter semester 2010/11 and therefore will not start a modularized course, as the province is no longer separated for financial reasons sees in a position to continue the Philosophical-Theological University in Benediktbeuern under its own sponsorship as before. In May 2011 the Provincial Council of the German Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco decided that the PTH could not continue as before without considerable additional financial support. At their spring plenary meeting in 2012, however, the Bavarian bishops decided to discontinue funding for the university. With the end of the 2013 summer semester, the course was therefore discontinued.
A large part of the university's library was given to the Cistercian university in Heiligenkreuz .
The Benediktbeuern-based department of the Catholic Foundation University continues its teaching in the Bachelor's degree in Social Work . For the 2013/2014 winter semester, 514 students were enrolled in this course. Another course in religious education (Bachelor) was opened for the 2014/15 winter semester .
