Paete is a 4th income class municipality in the Laguna Province of the Philippines , according to the census of August 1, 2015, it has 25,096 inhabitants.
The city is located in the northeast part of Laguna, along the coast of the Laguna de Bay . It was founded in 1580 by the Spanish monks Juan de Placencia and Diego de Oropesa of the Franciscan Order. It is believed that the earliest inhabitants were of Malaysian descent, who came from Borneo in their nimble and sturdy boats known as the Balangay .
The city became famous for its carvings and was therefore given the nickname "The Carving Capital of the Philippines" on March 15, 2005 by the then President Arroyo . It is also believed that the modern yo-yo , which originated in the Philippines, was invented in paete.

Origin of name

The Spanish conquistadors traditionally named the cities after holy persons. Paete was an exception. Legend has it that a young Franciscan priest was commissioned by his superior to visit the newly founded cities along the Laguna de Bay . The priest didn't know much about this area and asked a local for the name of this place. However, the latter misunderstood the question: He meant that he was being asked for the name of the tool he was currently using. So he answered Paet ( gouge ). Hence the name "Paete".
