BirdLife International has declared the mountain and the surrounding region, including Lake Ira Lalaro to the north, to be an Important Bird Area . Numerous species of birds live here, some of them are endemic and only occur in a limited area. The region is partly wooded with lowland forest and evergreen trees on the slopes. There are swamps around the Ira Lalaro. The area south of the mountain is almost untouched and almost unpopulated. In the karst hills there are smaller lakes, rivers, swamps and various forests. The best preserved primary forests of Timor can be found around the mountain . The area is part of the Nino Konis Santana National Park .
Others
In Malahara , plans were made for several years underground for the largest hydroelectric power station in the country to date, which would supply Lospalos and Dili with electricity. The water should flow from Lake Ira Lalaro below Paitchau towards the Timor Sea . The project has since been discontinued.
