Patrick Demarchelier (born August 21, 1943 in Le Havre ) is a French photographer who is particularly known for his work in the field of fashion photography .

Childhood, youth, first work experiences

Patrick Demarchelier was born near Paris in 1943 and spent his childhood with his mother and four brothers in the port city of Le Havre in north-west France. His stepfather gave him his first Kodak camera for his 17th birthday ; this marked the beginning of his passion for photography . He learned how to develop and edit films and initially primarily photographed his friends and on festive occasions. In the 1960s Demarchelier moved to Paris and worked in various photo laboratories.

In 1975 he left Paris with his partner and went to New York . Here he worked as a freelance photographer and eventually discovered the field of fashion photography for himself.
