Peter Ewaldt (born April 6, 1952 in St. Anton am Arlberg ; † January 22, 2017 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian musician and conductor .
education
In 1970 he graduated from the Academic Gymnasium Salzburg . He then trained as a conductor at the Mozarteum University of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg (now the Mozarteum University of Salzburg). Ewaldt graduated in 1972 with a diploma with distinction with Suite No. 1 for small orchestra by Igor Stravinsky .
Work
His artistic work on Igor Stravinsky already showed his broad artistic path, which Ewaldt was opening up as musical director to Giorgio Strehler's Das Spiel der Mächtigen, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's royal drama Heinrich VI. in the Felsenreitschule for the 1973 and 1974 years of the Salzburg Festival . From 1975 he worked as a répétiteur and conductor at the Landestheater Linz .
In 1981 Ewaldt moved to the Salzburg State Theater under the direction of Federik Mirdita and became first conductor and director of studies. Ewaldt was interested in new music, the musical theater repertoire and early music. Among the highlights of his artistic work at the Salzburg State Theater count include 2013, the premiere of the opera 18 days of the Egyptian composer Hossam Mahmoud, the revolutionary days in Cairo at Tahrir Square the day of wrath illuminated artistically in 2011 but also in 2015 the world premiere of the opera Dafne by Antonio Caldara , a composer of the Venetian late baroque in the hedge theater of Mirabell Palace in Salzburg. Under the musical direction of Peter Ewaldt, a number of musicals also had their Austrian premiere in Salzburg. Ewaldt's special merits included the return to the original Salzburg location of The Sound of Music with music by Richard Rodgers and the libretto by Oscar Hammerstein II and, most recently, Spamelot after the film Die Ritter der Kokosnuss by Monty Python .
Ewaldt offered another notable artistic achievement with the Austrian premiere of the Singspiel Im Weiße Rößl by Ralph Benatzky in the reconstructed original version.
The interest in new artistic forms of expression in music, opera and theater led Ewaldt to formative artistic work outside the Salzburg State Theater. In 1989 he was the conductor of the Austrian premiere of the opera Sintflut by Herbert Achternbusch (libretto) and Anton Prestele (music) in the production by Herbert Gantschacher in the Klagenfurt rock theater on the occasion of the festival “Week of Encounters”. After the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he developed Furore by Jiří Nekvasil and Daniel Dvořák (later directors of the Prague Národní) in 1990 and 1991 in collaboration with the visual artist Burgis Paier and the director Herbert Gantschacher for the Prague avant-garde opera company Opera divadlo ) a contemporary musical-visual concept of the dramma giocoso Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the occasion of the International Mozart Year 1991. From 1991 onwards, Ewaldt was artistically involved in the artistically new form of the presentation of new music, the scenic concerts that he shared with the conductor and composer Wolfgang Danzmayr and the director Herbert Gantschacher for ARBOS - Society for Music and Theater . The two scenic concerts kreuzweg based on poems by norbert c. kaser with music by Anton Prestele interpreted by Josef Köstlinger and Finally the silence grows in me with compositions by Arvo Pärt , Alfred Stingl and Clemens Vereno.
From 1992 Ewaldt was a permanent guest conductor of the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra in Essen. All these artistic activities led to the founding of the Ensemble Salzburger Musikkreise in 2004, which is dedicated to baroque music in connection with contemporary music. In this project he also worked with his long-term partner and visual artist Marianne Ewaldt .
