Peter Hoppe (born November 27, 1938 in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf , † March 3, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a construction painter , Peter Hoppe attended the Technical School for Applied Arts Berlin / Potsdam from 1957 to 1959 and then from 1960 to 1965 the University of Fine and Applied Arts Berlin-Weissensee . His teachers there included Ernst Rudolf Vogenauer , Walter Womacka and Arno Mohr . This was followed by a one-year traineeship , then freelance work as a painter in Berlin. From 1970 he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . His artistic work includes wall and panel paintings , drawings , graphics and, in loose succession, sets and costumes for drama and ballet productions . Peter Hoppe lived and worked in Berlin and in the summer studio in Hohen Barnim .

Study trips took him to Bulgaria , France , Italy , Cuba and Vietnam .

In terms of time and artist, Peter Hoppe belonged to the third generation of artists in the GDR , who sought and found new ways of expression and design in the 1970s, particularly under the conditions of "vastness and diversity" and the breakup of artistic taboos.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Hoppe set himself apart from the then ostensibly common Berlin painting (Berlin School, etc.). Still lifes , especially the Yellow Pictures , laid the basis for his continued presence. Light funds and sometimes expressive painting gestures became characteristic in portraits, figurative compositions and non-figurative works. In individual work phases, the fonts and the preferred coloring change from full-color palette to grisaille painting . Hoppe was not apodictically committed to a fixed personal style, but always remained recognizable. Time-related issues were mostly treated metaphorically. Classical mythology is often the subject of groups of works. Canvases , gouaches and drawings increasingly emerged in extensive series. The pictorial and the informal coexist. Illustrative realism, as well as the narrative element, lose themselves to a symbolically concentrated representation. Hoppe's ambivalence prevents clinging to positions that are closed in terms of content and form in the work groups that grow one after the other. The formal imprint is placed more spartan and more directly in indefinite pictorial spaces on monochrome funds.

In the years 2008/09 Hoppe worked on his panel group KATHARSIS and the LAPIDAR drawings on paper, on non-representational canvases as 2 and 3 combinations with minimal geometric elements against free-swinging, gesturally voluminous linear charcoal drawings: the geometries and canvas drawings .

Quote

"His work is an example of the rejuvenation process in Berlin painting, for its uninterrupted flow. His art is vaguely reminiscent of the expressive activism that Paris and Zickelbein once possessed. Hoppe's painting, placed thinly on the canvas, has a dynamic gesture and that Penchant for great composition. " (Lothar Lang: Artists in Berlin , Verlag Welt der Kunst, 1979)
