Pokrov ( Russian Покров ) is a city in the Vladimir Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,756 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 80 km west of the oblast capital, Vladimir, on the left of the Klyazma , a left tributary of the Oka , which flows into the Volga , and about 100 km east of Moscow .

Pokrov belongs to the Petushki Raion .

history

The place originated in the 17th century village at the Antonius-und-Mariä-Schutz-und- Interbitte -Kloster ( Антониева Покровская пустынь / Antonijewa Pokrowskaja pustyn), which existed from the 15th to the 18th century. The naming took place after the name of the monastery: Pokrow is the Russian (or Church Slavonic ) short form for Pokrow Preswjatoi Bogorodozy , the holiday protection and intercession of the Holy Mother of God , one of the "great festivals" of the Russian Orthodox Church on October 1st according to Julian Calendar .

In 1778 town charter was granted.

Culture and sights

Several churches from the 19th century have been preserved in the city, including the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary ( Покровская церковь / Pokrowskaja zerkow) and the Trinity Church ( Троицкая церковь / Troitskaja terkow).

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important company in the city is a confectionery factory of the American Mondelēz International , which was owned by the German food company Stollwerck from 1996 to 2001 and was reconstructed and significantly rebuilt during this time. There are also companies in the pharmaceutical and textile industries as well as in the building materials industry.

The city lies on the railway line Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod, opened in 1862 (train station four kilometers from the city; route kilometer 110), on which the majority of the trains of the Trans-Siberian Railway run on its western part from Moscow. The M7 Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – KazanUfa road (part of the European route 22 ) also runs through Pokrov .
