Prairie City is a small town (with the status " City ") in Jasper County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Prairie City had 1680 inhabitants, the number of which increased slightly to 1685 by 2013.

Prairie City is located in southeast central Iowa, in the eastern suburbs of Des Moines. The city is 130 km north of the Iowa- Missouri border . The Mississippi forms the border with Illinois about 210 km east , while the Missouri River forms the border with Nebraska about 240 km west .

The city extends over an area of 3.13 km² and is the largest village within the Des Moines Township . A small part of the city extends into the northeastern neighboring Mound Prairie Township .
