Colfax is located in the southeastern center of Iowa, in the eastern suburbs of Des Moines. The city lies on the southern Skunk River . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri runs around 140 km south of Colfax , the border with Illinois is formed around 210 km east of the Mississippi , while the Missouri River forms the border between Iowa and Nebraska around 240 km west .
The geographical coordinates of Colfax are 41 ° 40'40 "north latitude and 93 ° 14'43" west longitude. The city extends over an area of 4.66 km² and is mainly located in the Washington Township . The urban area extends to smaller parts into the Mound Prairie Township and the Poweshiek Township .

The north-south running Iowa Highway 117 is the main road through downtown. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
An Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS) line runs from Des Moines to the Mississippi River through the Colfax metropolitan area. An IAIS freight yard is located on the northeastern city limits.

The place was founded in 1866 and named after Congressman and later 17th Vice President Schuyler Colfax . In 1875 the settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality.
In the same year coal mining began in Colfax. Another industry was the use of the 14 mineral springs in the area around the city.
