Coin finds prove that the Romans and Celts were already familiar with the Preblauer springs. The healing springs have been documented since around the year 1000. In the 13th century, the water was delivered in sealed clay jugs to the court of the bishops of Bamberg , who owned the upper Lavant valley including Prebl. In 1538 Paracelsus characterized the water with the words "... endowed with excellent medicinal powers". The first documentary mention of the Preblauer Sauerbrunn comes from the monastery register of the Beyerhofen rule in 1575. The source is recorded in a map of the Duchy of Carinthia from 1612.
In the middle of the 17th century, the doctor Freisinger-Mistuzzi carried out "Lavanttaler Cures in conjunction with Preblauer Water". The water was used for diseases of the digestive, kidney and urinary tract.
It was Albine Farlatti from Klagenfurt who recognized the great economic opportunity. Farlatti teamed up with Dominik Bancalari, Alois Hussa and Josef Steinhäubl, founded a company and in 1869 bought the mineral springs and all associated properties in Preblau (the Carinthian state parliament, which had replaced the Estates landscape, had decided to sell) for around 43,000 guilders . As early as 1871, 100,000 bottles of Preblauer water are said to have been sent to all parts of the monarchy. In 1879 there were already twice as many. In 1892, when a new fountain house was built, the proud number of a million bottles shipped could already be referred to.
But the bathing and spa business in Preblau also experienced an upswing at that time. Above all, the railway line between Zeltweg and Wolfsberg , which opened in 1900, gave many Viennese the opportunity to reach Preblau. In summer, a Fiaker waited day after day at the Preblauer Bahnhof for guests from all parts of the monarchy. Even War Minister Franz Bilau-Rheidt was so impressed by the success of a cure in Preblau that he is said to have induced his officials to order Preblauer mineral water for all military hospitals. Because the demand increased steadily under these conditions, a second spring in the floodplain began to be bottled soon afterwards.
The end of the spa business only came when the end of the Danube monarchy was just around the corner. The wealthy guests from the big cities, who had made Preblau a posh spa, stayed away now. The sanatorium had to close in 1918, and the former sanatoriums soon began to fall into disrepair. In the meantime, the Preblauer Wasser had developed into one of the most famous mineral and medicinal waters in Europe, and is still bottled today and sold to all parts of the world.

The three springs arise from the mica slate rock in the Saualpe area . The waters come to the surface with their own carbon dioxide.
The most important source is the Paracelsus spring at 828 m above sea level with a discharge of 5.7 liters per second. The water is marketed under the “Preblauer Classic” brand.
The composition according to the 1998 control analysis by the Federal Institute for Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research is shown in the table opposite.
