Baden-Württemberg cycling network

Target network (schematic)
Cycle network (dark blue: start network, light blue: destination network)

By 2020, a nationwide, area-wide cycling network is to be established in Baden-Württemberg . By 2025, this network should be 75% expanded to the target network level . In the cycling strategy of the state of Baden-Württemberg it is stated that this cycle network contains the official regional long-distance cycle routes.

Quality requirements

By 2020, all routes in the cycle network, including the regional long-distance cycle routes, should have Startnetz quality . The existing quality of the state long-distance cycle routes is considered sufficient. The rest of the bike network should be suitable for everyday use . Here, compromises with regard to the regulations of the Recommendations for Bicycle Traffic Facilities (ERA) are tolerated.

The regional long-distance cycle routes should be safe for the destination network, but do not have to be suitable for everyday use throughout . The rest of the cycle network should achieve the quality standards of the ERA in conjunction with the general administrative regulation for road traffic regulations (VwV-StVO).

According to ERA, one-way cycle paths must be 2 meters wide, but at least 1.60 meters when there is little bicycle traffic (according to VwV-StVO, a minimum width of 1.50 meters applies). Cycle lanes must be 1.85 meters wide and protective strips must be 1.50 meters wide, but at least 1.25 meters. The width of the marking lines between the road and the cycle path is considered part of the cycle path.

According to the Ministry of Transport in its cycling strategy at the beginning of 2016, all sections of the cycle network that already have start network quality should be signposted as soon as possible. In 2014, the state long-distance cycle routes were uniformly signposted over a total length of 4,800 km.

Regional long-distance cycle routes
Cycle network and regional long-distance cycle routes

The regional long- distance cycle routes are explained on the Baden-Württemberg Cycle Tour Planner website , and an overview brochure is also available.

The ADFC has awarded a number of regional long-distance cycle routes with three or four stars as quality cycle routes. The Taubertal Cycle Path has been awarded five stars since 2009, making it the first in Baden-Württemberg and, after the Main Cycle Route, the second German long -distance cycle route to receive this highest award from the General German Bicycle Club. The Albtäler Cycle Path was also awarded, but is not one of the state long-distance cycle paths .

Other long-distance cycle routes in northern Baden-Württemberg are shown on the Radsüden website .

The e-bike region Stuttgart (main route), which does not belong to the official regional long- distance cycle routes, has been added to the table and the graphic overviews .
