John F. Kennedy took office as President of the United States on January 20, 1961 and was the first Catholic to be elected to the highest office in the United States . On November 22, 1963 , he was shot dead on the street in Dallas . He was succeeded by the previous Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson .
A special feature of his cabinet was that the Democrat Kennedy appointed two Republicans , Treasury Secretary C. Douglas Dillon and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara . Personnel changes remained the exception during his less than three-year presidency.
