Riverhead is Ulvers soundtrack for the Justin Oakey film of the same name . It was published by House of Mythology in December 2016.
Creation and publication
Canadian director Justin Oakey, a long-time fan of the band Ulver, sent Kristoffer Rygg his short film Flankers in autumn 2015 . This resulted in an exchange about the soundtrack and a possible collaboration. As a result, the band accepted the offer to compose the score for Oakey's planned feature Riverhead . After an agreement on the style and atmosphere of the music, Ulver Oakey sent the first musical sketches before filming even started. After filming, the shoot was finalized by revising existing pieces and adding new ones.
In addition to Ulver members Kristoffer Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker and Jørn H. Sværen , Ole-Henrik Moe and Kari Rønnekleiv were involved in the recordings with various string instruments. These were conducted and mixed in June and July 2016 by Ylwizaker and Rygg in the Oak Hill Studio in Oslo. Jamie Gomez Arellano mastered the soundtrack in September 2016 at Orgone Studio in London. Riverhead was released in December of that year as a download, on CD, black, white, marbled and clear vinyl.

style
Ulvers soundtrack can be assigned to the ambient , with influences from Celtic and Nordic folklore. It is mostly arranged in a minimalist way, with a few more intense passages. Oakey and Ulver wanted to create a subdued, vague, and threatening atmosphere.
reception
“I must say I found it a bit thin at the start, and not having any great impact. [...] Invest the time in it. It's hardly essential, but it does contain some essential musical truths, and will please darkambient fans satisfactorily. "
'Riverhead' is a majestically haunting album, it makes you really want to see the film and provides yet another different side of Ulver. Beautiful like 10,000 acres of snowy wasteland.
