Robert von Zimmermann (born March 17, 1817 in Oels , † January 10, 1878 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the later Prussian major general Friedrich Paul von Zimmermann (1777-1839) and his wife Charlotte Christiane Amalie, née Giese (1785-1859). The later major general Paul Friedrich von Zimmermann (1814–1875) was his older brother.

Military career

Zimmermann attended grammar school in Görlitz and the knight academy in Liegnitz . On September 19, 1833 he joined the 36th Infantry Regiment (4th Reserve Regiment) of the Prussian Army in Saarlouis as a musketeer . Here he advanced to secondary lieutenant until mid-January 1836 and was commanded to form the combined reserve battalion in Magdeburg in 1838/39 . From April 1, 1840, Zimmermann was commanded for four years as adjutant of the Landwehr battalion in Essen . In May 1847 he rose to regimental adjutant and was promoted in this position on June 24, 1848 to prime lieutenant. Subject to return to Prussian service Zimmermann was on November 1, 1848 as a company commander with captain rank of the Schleswig-Holstein army transferred. During the campaign against Denmark in 1848/49 he took part in the fighting near Fredericia , Kolding , Atzbüll , Gravenstein and Gudsoe. On March 13, 1849 Zimmermann officially resigned from the Prussian Army. On May 24, 1849, he was commended by army orders and awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. After the campaign was over, he worked for the Holstein Ministry of War until April 16, 1850, and shortly thereafter resigned in Prussian services.

Zimmermann was aggregated as a first lieutenant in the 36th Infantry Regiment and on July 13, 1850, transferred to the 6th Jäger Battalion in Breslau . Here he was promoted to captain on June 22, 1852 and shortly afterwards on July 13, 1852, he joined the Guard Jäger battalion as a company commander . On April 14, 1857, he was transferred to the Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment in Berlin. With his promotion to major on May 31, 1859, Zimmermann became the second in command of the 1st Battalion in the 4th Guards Landwehr Regiment in Hamm . He was then in command for a year as a battalion leader of the 2nd Combined Grenadier Regiment, from which the 4th Guards Grenadier Regiment was formed. Here Zimmermann acted as commander of the 1st battalion until April 12, 1861. He was then appointed commander of the Pomeranian Jäger Battalion No. 2 in Greifswald and in this position was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 25, 1864 .

On the occasion of the war against Austria , Zimmermann was appointed commander of Hohenzoller's Infantry Regiment No. 40 on June 14, 1866 for the duration of the mobile relationship . He led his association in the fights at Hühnerwasser and Münchengrätz . He was wounded in the Battle of Königgrätz and confirmed as regimental commander after the peace agreement . On September 20, 1866 carpenter was colonel and for his services during the war with the Order of the Crown III. Excellent with swords.

As already during the war with him the tuberculosis broke out, had Zimmermann his farewell take and was on January 9, 1868 board for disposition made. On September 20, 1870 Zimmermann took over the East Prussian Landwehr Brigade and on February 22, 1871 received the character of major general. After the preliminary peace of Versailles , he returned to the inactive relationship on March 25, 1871 and was awarded the star of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit on July 22, 1871 in recognition of his achievements .

Zimmermann had married Marie Charlotte von Wulffen (1830–1901) on January 26, 1852 in Pavelwitz Castle . She was the daughter of Colonel Ludwig von Wulffen.
